Daily Mail: Dallas ICE Shooter ID’d; ‘Anti-ICE’ Messaging On Ammo, FBI Confirms

Both Beege and I have covered pieces of the updates in earlier posts, but this deserves its own thread. The sniper who killed at least one other person and wounded two others at an ICE facility in Dallas has been positively identified — at least according to the Daily Mail. And thanks to the unused ammunition Joshua Jahn left unfired as police approached, so is the motive, at least in a general sense:

A sniper who killed at least one migrant and wounded several others in a shooting at a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility has been identified as Joshua Jahn, 29, the Daily Mail can reveal.  …

Multiple law enforcement sources confirmed the identity of the gunman as Jahn, and ICE said in a statement that the sniper ‘fired indiscriminately’. 

Early reports indicated a second victim died in hospital, but officials have not confirmed that. The victims were ICE detainees, and no law enforcement were injured in the shooting.

Officials said at a press conference on Wednesday morning that bullets found by the shooter’s body were engraved with ‘anti-ICE messages’, and FBI Director Kash Patel shared an image of the bullets reading: ‘Anti-ICE.’ 

Here is Patel’s post with the image. The writing only applies to one round, but “ANTI-ICE” clearly stands out to the naked eye:

It’s not clear whether the perp wrote messages on the other rounds, perhaps on the side away from the camera. Nevertheless, that is pretty solid evidence toward a motive, although it doesn’t necessarily exclude other motives. This was an act of political violence that targeted ICE, not the detainees, and it suggests that either Jahn was not a good marksman or didn’t much care who got killed.

Another news outlet has pictures that purportedly show Jahn after his suicide. I’d recommend not going to that site, but it does appear that the corpse resembles the social-media photo of the perp. They also have mug shots of Jahn from a previous arrest, so he’s at least known to law enforcement in some way. Thus far, no one has come up with any of Jahn’s social media postings; a quick search under that name on Facebook turned up a handful of accounts, none of which seem to be his. The same is true on Twitter/X, at least on a simple search. 

Worth noting: At least one other outlet has a picture of a completely different person under that name. That person does not resemble the picture of the purported corpse. All of this seems a little sketchy, so be careful before accepting those pictures as genuine. If they are, though, one has to wonder how the corpse picture got leaked in the first place. 

One can apply less skepticism to the picture of the unused ammo, though. That got published on official channels, and matches what the FBI has already revealed. As I noted earlier, the FBI considers this “an act of targeted violence,” and will investigate it as such:

At a press conference near the scene, Joseph Rothrock, FBI special agent in charge of the Dallas Field office, said that rounds found near the suspected shooter “contained messages that are anti-ICE in nature.”

The FBI is investigating this incident as “an act of targeted violence,” Rothrock said. “It is unfortunately just the most recent example we’ve seen of targeted violence.”

With all this in mind, it appears that Ted Cruz got read into the case while on scene at the shooting. That explains his frustration with the continuing demonization of federal immigration-enforcement offices. He spoke briefly at the presser, and his remarks are well worth endorsing and amplifying.
