David Hogg’s Critique of Democrats: Men Want to Get Laid

Well, he’s not wrong, but he also misses a lot.

David Hogg spent some time with Bill Maher, and it was a very odd appearance. 

As Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee–a job with no particular portfolio aside from being an ambassador for the party, Hogg has certainly stood out from the standard politicos who have inhabited such jobs in the past. The Chair has a real job–raise money and herd cats–and the Vice Chairs basically exist to be sops to constituencies within the party. 

Hogg wants to make a difference–rather than hold the party together, he wants to reshape it into something more appealing to his demographic–basically, heterosexual beta men who identify as progressive, which is an increasingly small group.

The newsy, clippable bit of Hogg’s interview/discussion with Maher was his diagnosis for why men are fleeing the party, and in particular for why younger men have been leaving in droves after having hewed the line within the party for years: young men want to get laid and have fun, and the Democratic Party has been the party of killjoys.

In acknowledging this, he’s not entirely wrong, but neither is he entirely right. The Democrat Party is entirely fine with young men having fun and even getting laid–the party is absolutely obsessed with sex, and only likes freedom in any form if it includes consensual sex between queers or in front of a computer screen.

Heterosexual sex between women and men, while not strictly forbidden, requires intense negotiations and multiple dangers for men when Democrats get their way. 

But Hogg doesn’t seem to get that the problem goes much deeper than Democrats’ focus on promoting a pleasure-based lifestyle for everybody but heterosexual men. It’s that the Democrats hate masculinity per se, and are deeply hostile to the aspirations of men that go far beyond mere sexual pleasure (which men indeed do seek out and love).

Democrats hate male ambition and all the masculine virtues and impulses, and young men have gotten the message. It’s not just fun that Democrats virtue-police–in fact, certain types of “fun” (sensual pleasure) seem to be an obsession with Democrats (again, as long as men don’t pursue having fun with women who are simultaneously girl bossed and dominant and sexual fragile flowers who are dangerous for young men)–but male ambition. 

Democrats are hostile to masculinity, and “getting laid and having fun” are only a small part of that. 

Nobody is lower on the intersectional ladder than heterosexual white males, and men know that. Until the Democrat Party recognizes that men are human beings too, and not solely oppressors, they will continue failing to attract them to the party.
