The Justice Department has dismissed dozens of prosecutors who handled criminal cases related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach.
The move follows President Donald Trump’s post-election actions, including issuing pardons for approximately 1,500 defendants prosecuted under the Biden-Harris administration’s Justice Department.
The terminations were announced late Friday, with interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin notifying employees via email.

According to Politico, the dismissals are part of a broader restructuring effort within federal law enforcement agencies.
This includes personnel changes at the FBI and the removal of multiple inspectors general across the government.
“The Justice Department abruptly fired dozens of prosecutors who worked on criminal cases stemming from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol,” Politico reported.
“It’s the latest extraordinary purge of officials Donald Trump has deemed adversarial to his interests.”
The restructuring follows Trump’s executive actions, including revoking security clearances for intelligence officials who signed a letter casting doubt on the legitimacy of Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020.
One of Trump’s first major acts upon returning to office was issuing pardons for January 6 defendants.
The move drew sharp criticism from the Biden-aligned Justice Department, which had prioritized prosecuting participants in the Capitol riot over other criminal cases, including those involving child sex abuse.
While the dismissals of the prosecuting team have sparked some backlash, Trump’s ability to grant pardons falls within the constitutional powers of the presidency.
The Biden-Harris administration previously exercised similar authority, including issuing controversial pardons before leaving office.
The Justice Department terminations align with a broader restructuring effort within the Trump administration.
In addition to changes at the DOJ, the FBI has reportedly reassigned or dismissed dozens of agents ahead of the expected confirmation of Kash Patel as FBI director.
The administration has also removed at least 15 inspectors general from various federal agencies.
These officials, along with those involved in handling January 6 cases, are among the government personnel the Trump team has sought to replace as part of a shift in federal law enforcement priorities.
The changes at the Justice Department signal a clear realignment under Trump’s leadership, reinforcing his commitment to reshaping the agencies involved in politically charged investigations during the previous administration.
