Comments made by Hall of Fame cornerback and current college football coach Deion Sanders regarding the Cleveland Browns have resurfaced following the selection of his son, Shedeur Sanders, in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Shedeur, a former standout quarterback at Colorado and Jackson State under his father’s leadership, was drafted 144th overall by the Browns despite once being projected as a potential first-round pick.
After his selection, Shedeur Sanders expressed gratitude, posting on X, “Thank you God,” and later telling local reporters, “I would say I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity throughout everything.”

Sanders emphasized focusing on the positives, saying, “You can’t be up, too low or anything. You got to be able to celebrate. And when we score a touchdown, we celebrate for a little bit. Now, it’s back to, time to work, it’s time to go.”
However, Deion Sanders’ previous remarks about Cleveland have drawn renewed attention.

In 2018, while working as an NFL analyst and high school football coach, Sanders advised that any young quarterback being considered by the Browns for the first overall pick should attempt to avoid playing for the team, referencing Eli Manning’s 2004 draft maneuver to avoid the San Diego Chargers.
“I love what the @Browns have done this offseason but if I’m a young QB ain’t no way I’m going to Cleveland,” Deion Sanders posted on X at the time. “I would pull a ELI MANNING If possible. #ThinkAboutthat #Truth.”

Sanders’ comments came shortly before the Browns selected Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield as the first overall pick in the 2018 draft.
At that time, Hue Jackson was still head coach, though he would be dismissed during the same season.
Since then, the Browns have undergone substantial changes, including the hiring of head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry, and they have improved their organizational stability.
Cleveland has also seen considerable turnover at quarterback. Including the two rookies selected in this year’s draft — Shedeur Sanders and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel — the Browns have cycled through 13 different starting quarterbacks since 2018.
Heading into the 2024 offseason, the Browns’ quarterback room includes an injured Deshaun Watson, veteran Kenny Pickett, rookies Sanders and Gabriel, and 40-year-old Joe Flacco, who returned to the team for another stint after leading them during part of the 2023 season.
Another resurfaced comment from Deion Sanders came just before the draft.
In a casual pre-draft conversation with Shedeur, recorded with music playing in the background, Deion reacted to hearing that Joe Flacco was still on the Browns’ roster.
“They got Joe Flacco,” Shedeur said.
“Flacco my age!” Deion responded, competing with the music’s loud bass.
Though Deion Sanders, 57, is nearly two decades older than Flacco, the remark reflected surprise at the veteran quarterback’s longevity.
Despite his father’s past critiques, Shedeur Sanders made it clear he is embracing his opportunity in Cleveland.
“For me, it was just playing quarterback,” Sanders said. “That’s what it’s about.”
As Shedeur prepares to begin his professional career with the Browns, attention remains on how both he and the franchise will move forward, especially given the team’s ongoing search for long-term stability at the quarterback position.
