Delta Flight Hit By Turbulence, Dozens Sent to the Hospital After Emergency Landing [WATCH]

A Delta Air Lines flight en route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam was forced to make an emergency landing in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening after encountering significant turbulence that resulted in multiple passenger injuries, as reported by The New York Post.

Delta Flight 72, which departed from Salt Lake City International Airport, was scheduled to arrive in Amsterdam but was diverted to Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport following the mid-air turbulence event.

The aircraft landed safely at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time.

According to Delta, emergency personnel, including the airport fire department and paramedics, were waiting on the tarmac when the flight arrived. A total of 25 passengers were transported to local hospitals for medical evaluation and treatment.

The severity of the injuries has not been fully disclosed, but Delta confirmed that the turbulence was serious enough to warrant immediate medical attention for over two dozen individuals.

The airline has not released information about the specific cause of the turbulence or whether flight crew members were among those injured.

“Delta teams are working to support our customers and crew,” the airline said in a statement. “We apologize for the experience and are fully cooperating with investigators.”

Incidents involving turbulence that result in significant injuries remain rare in commercial aviation. However, there has been growing concern within the aviation community regarding the potential for increased turbulence intensity in future flights.

Some researchers have suggested that shifting atmospheric patterns may contribute to changes in jet stream behavior, potentially leading to more frequent or severe turbulence in certain air corridors.

The incident follows a deadly turbulence event in May 2024, when a Singapore Airlines flight encountered extreme turbulence mid-flight, resulting in the death of one passenger. That was the first fatality attributed to turbulence on a major international airline in several decades.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has not yet confirmed whether it will open a formal investigation into the Delta incident. Passengers aboard the diverted flight have been rebooked on alternative routes to continue their travel to Amsterdam.

Delta said it is continuing to provide assistance to those affected and is working with medical personnel to ensure all injured passengers receive necessary care.
