Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) is facing scrutiny after spreading inaccurate information about a recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation at a California cannabis farm.
Gallego, who has signaled interest in a potential 2028 presidential run, claimed the operation targeted immigrant families who “have been here for years picking our food.”
However, the farm in question—Glass House Farms in Ventura County—does not produce food crops.

It grows marijuana, which is legal under California law but remains federally prohibited. ICE, under President Donald Trump’s directive, conducted enforcement actions targeting illegal workers on the site, which federal agents say were operating outside immigration and labor laws.
The false claims began circulating widely on X, where Gallego reposted a video originally shared by political commentator Brian Allen.
Allen stated, “ICE just swarmed Ventura County fields, hauling away the very farm workers who keep America’s produce aisles stocked. We’re arresting assets; treating the backbone of our food chain like a threat.”
Gallego added to the narrative by writing, “Instead of prioritizing dangerous criminals, Trump is targeting families that have been here for years picking our food. The public outcry and protests are occurring because the American public knows this is wrong.”

Representative Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) also repeated the claim, suggesting the workers taken into custody were strawberry pickers.
“How many MS-13 gang members are waking up at 3 a.m. to pick strawberries? O’yeah, zero!” Gomez wrote.
“Trump said he’d go after ‘bad hombres,’ but he’s targeting the immigrant farm workers who feed America. Either he lied — or he can’t tell the difference.”

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) responded to the operation with a statement blaming President Trump for what he described as “traumatizing” enforcement.
“Kids running from tear gas, crying on the phone because their mother was just taken from the fields,” Newsom said.
“Trump calls me ‘Newscum’ — but he’s the real scum.”

Despite these public statements, federal officials have confirmed that the operation targeted cannabis farms—not food fields—and involved the detainment of individuals suspected of violating federal immigration laws.

Two raids were carried out in Ventura County, during which agents encountered resistance from left-wing protesters.
Officials say that demonstrators threw rocks at law enforcement vehicles and that one individual fired a weapon at federal officers.
ICE has stated that the operations were focused on identifying and apprehending illegal aliens engaged in unauthorized work on the cannabis farms.
The agency also confirmed that safety protocols were followed during the enforcement actions and that federal officers were attacked while conducting the operations.
Officials have not confirmed how many individuals were taken into custody but have indicated that several arrests were made in connection to the investigation.
The agency is also coordinating with federal prosecutors on possible charges related to the assault on law enforcement.
The incident has reignited national debate over immigration enforcement, labor practices in the cannabis industry, and the role of federal and state authorities in regulating workforces in industries that fall under overlapping jurisdictions.
President Trump has emphasized a renewed focus on enforcing existing immigration law and holding employers accountable for hiring undocumented workers.
The controversy follows a string of public disputes between federal immigration officials and Democrat-led states like California, which has maintained sanctuary state policies and routinely objects to ICE operations conducted without state coordination.
As more details about the ICE raids and the individuals involved are released, the Biden-era narrative of “essential farm workers” continues to be questioned in cases where those claims do not align with the facts of the operation.
