Progressive politicians love to talk about unity—until their past catches up with them.
In New Jersey, one of the top Democrats aiming for the governor’s mansion, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, is under fire after a resurfaced video exposed him publicly endorsing and applauding radical Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, as reported by Fox News.
And this wasn’t just a handshake or a photo op. This was full-blown adoration of a man who’s made a career out of hate.

In a 2004 video, filmed at a church in Newark, Baraka introduced Farrakhan to the congregation as “the leader of every Black person,” going on to say no president or activist could match his “moral authority.”
Yes, the same Farrakhan who once praised Hitler as a “great man,” smeared Jews, raged against LGBTQ Americans, and referred to White people as “crackers” and “devils.”

Baraka didn’t flinch as Farrakhan spewed violent rhetoric to the crowd. Instead, he stood to give him not one, but two standing ovations. One came after Farrakhan mocked non-violence, telling the audience:
“The cracker hit you on your jaw, you break his neck. That’s the way we think.”

Another round of applause came after Farrakhan called White people “demons” and “the real devil.” If that’s the kind of “leadership” Baraka believes in, New Jersey voters should be alarmed.
This wasn’t an isolated event. Farrakhan went on to speak at Baraka’s high school in 2012—yes, to students. In 2017, Baraka welcomed Farrakhan again for a speech titled “Separation or Death,” where the 91-year-old extremist called for reparations and a breakaway Black state.
And in 2018, he returned to Newark to back Baraka personally, stating, “I came here tonight to stand for my brother.”

Instead of distancing himself, Baraka is doubling down. When confronted by Jewish Insider, he brushed off criticism and claimed he “will not be bullied or silenced.”
He even defended Farrakhan’s group, saying the Nation of Islam has “deep respect in many parts of the Black community.”
That “respect” doesn’t erase the years of hate speech, antisemitism, and open bigotry tracked by both the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center—who have both labeled the Nation of Islam as a hate group.
Baraka’s campaign claims to “reimagine New Jersey,” but if that vision includes cheering on violent hate preachers and rewriting history for radicals, voters should seriously reconsider who they’re handing the keys to Trenton.
This is not about race, religion, or background. This is about values. And no candidate who claps for Farrakhan should be anywhere near the governor’s office.
