A prominent Democratic attorney has publicly criticized MSNBC and its anchor Rachel Maddow over their handling of the now-settled defamation case involving Georgia gynecologist Dr. Mahendra Amin, who was falsely accused of performing mass hysterectomies at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility.

As Fox News reported, Stacey Evans, a practicing attorney and elected Democrat representing Georgia House District 57, spoke out Thursday about what she described as “reckless” and “preposterous” media coverage of her client.

Evans represented Dr. Amin in a defamation suit against NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News and MSNBC, which settled last week for $30 million.

The case was scheduled to go to trial on April 22 in Waycross, Georgia, before the settlement was finalized.

The allegations against Dr. Amin began in September 2020 after NBC News published a story citing a whistleblower who claimed the doctor had performed unnecessary hysterectomies on women at the Irwin County Detention Center.

MSNBC followed the story with a series of on-air segments branding Amin with the label “uterus collector,” a phrase repeated on programs including “Deadline: White House,” “All In with Chris Hayes,” and “The Rachel Maddow Show.”

Evans said Maddow’s reporting stood out as especially egregious.

“It was Rachel Maddow who tried to tie Dr. Amin as the next chapter in the continuing saga, essentially, of mistreatment of immigrants by the Donald Trump administration,” Evans told Fox News Digital.

“She opened that block by talking about child separation policies and this former Trump administrator who had been tracking women’s menstrual cycles… then to say that Dr. Amin was the next chapter in this saga, it was preposterous the way she did it.”

Despite being a self-described regular viewer of MSNBC, Evans said she now approaches media coverage with greater skepticism due to her legal experience handling defamation cases.

“It’s disappointing that any media would be so reckless,” she said, noting MSNBC continued pushing the hysterectomy narrative even when internal records showed only two procedures had occurred—both deemed medically necessary.

Evans emphasized that ICE had verified the two surgeries performed by Dr. Amin were warranted based on internal reviews, and that NBC had access to this information. She described the media narrative as a:

“Classic example of following sensationalism as opposed to facts.”

Federal Judge Lisa Godbey Wood, who oversaw the case in the Southern District of Georgia, had previously ruled that a jury could reasonably find actual malice in the reporting.

The court found “undisputed evidence” showed “there were no mass hysterectomies or high numbers of hysterectomies at the facility,” and that Dr. Amin was not a “uterus collector.”

With the case now settled, the scheduled trial has been canceled. NBCUniversal has not issued a public statement regarding the outcome, and MSNBC has not responded to media requests for comment.
