A tense encounter unfolded Friday at the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility when several Democrat lawmakers, including Rep. LaMonica McIver and Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, attempted an unscheduled inspection of the site and were met by federal authorities.
The situation escalated, leading to physical altercations and the arrest of the mayor.
Rep. McIver, wearing a red jacket and part of a group of Democratic members of Congress, was observed engaging physically with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents during the incident.

The group approached the entrance of the facility and demanded entry.
When refused access due to lack of prior clearance, tensions rose quickly.
Delaney Hall, located in Newark and recently expanded under the Trump administration, was designated in February as a key location to hold detainees facing removal proceedings.
The facility’s proximity to an international airport was cited by ICE officials as a strategic advantage for processing and transportation logistics.
“This detention center is the first to open under the new administration,” acting ICE Director Caleb Vitello said in February.
“The location near an international airport streamlines logistics and helps facilitate the timely processing of individuals in our custody as we pursue President Trump’s mandate to arrest, detain, and remove illegal aliens from our communities.”
According to law enforcement officials, the Democrats began shouting at ICE officers and attempted to storm the facility gates after being denied entry.
Mayor Baraka was reported to have attempted access via a restricted side entrance.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents issued multiple warnings to Baraka before placing him in handcuffs and taking him into custody.

Following the incident, Interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba issued a public statement confirming Mayor Baraka’s arrest.
“The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, committed trespass and ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to remove himself from the ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey this afternoon,” Habba said.
“He has willingly chosen to disregard the law. That will not stand in this state. He has been taken into custody. NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.”

ICE and DHS officials have not released additional statements regarding McIver’s involvement or possible legal consequences stemming from the altercation.
The Delaney Hall facility continues to operate under expanded capacity as part of the Trump administration’s nationwide effort to expedite the detention and removal of individuals in the country illegally, particularly those with criminal records or pending charges.
The Department of Homeland Security has not announced whether further security measures will be implemented at the facility following Friday’s confrontation.
