Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) raised concerns about the future of U.S. elections and called for a new generation of leadership in the Senate during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday.
Speaking with host Jake Tapper, Crockett addressed growing frustrations within the Democratic Party over Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) leadership, while also casting doubt on whether the country would even hold elections in four years.

Tapper asked Crockett whether she would support Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in a primary challenge against Schumer, given reports that both progressives and moderates were open to the idea.

“That’s four years from now. If you were asking me, at least in two years, then I would have an absolute answer,” Crockett responded.
“But I can tell you that there are a lot of people that are watching his leadership in this moment. This is the moment. We don’t even know what elections will look like in four years or if we will have elections.”
Her comment suggesting uncertainty about future elections went unchallenged by Tapper, and she quickly pivoted to discussing the need for new leadership.
“I definitely think that younger, fresher leadership may be something that many of us, not just depending on what part of the spectrum you’re on, but many Americans may be looking for, especially in the state of New York,” Crockett added.

Crockett’s remarks come amid growing debate within the Democratic Party over Schumer’s position as Senate minority leader.
Progressive groups have been vocal in their calls for a leadership change, and even House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) declined to give Schumer a direct endorsement when asked.
Tapper pressed Crockett on this issue, citing Jeffries’ response of “Next question” when asked whether he supports Schumer’s leadership.
“I think Senate Democrats have to sit down and take a look and decide whether or not Chuck Schumer is the one to lead in this moment,” Crockett said.
She also acknowledged the broader frustration among Democrats following recent legislative battles.
“I understand that the American people are frustrated. Please believe many of us did not sleep because we were calling and trying to impress upon the Senators the importance of pushing back in this moment,” she said.
“As you saw, we had all but one Democrat in the House that voted for this. So that’s 212 Democrats in the House. And then you had the vast majority of senators vote for it or vote against it as well. And so the idea that Chuck Schumer is the only one that’s got a brain in the room and the only one that can think through all of the pros and cons is absolutely ridiculous.”
Crockett’s statements reflect a growing divide within the Democratic Party as many on the left push for younger leadership, particularly in the wake of recent legislative fights and concerns over the party’s direction heading into future elections.
Her suggestion that the U.S. may not even have elections in four years adds another layer to the ongoing political turbulence.
