A House Rules Committee hearing turned contentious this week when Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL) made inflammatory remarks toward pro-life members during discussion of President Donald Trump’s tax legislation, prompting sharp rebukes from Republican lawmakers.

The incident occurred during a GOP-led hearing on the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” the legislative package that passed the Senate on Tuesday and is expected to clear the House ahead of the July 4th holiday.

Frost was present as a witness but used the opportunity to accuse Republicans of hypocrisy on the issue of life.

“You see, they say they’re pro-life because they want the baby to be born, go to school, and get shot in the school. Die in the school, die on the streets,” Frost said during his remarks.

The comment triggered immediate backlash from committee members. Chairwoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) swiftly banged the gavel as members attempted to speak over Frost’s comments.

“I was not going to say anything, but you’ve gone over the cliff!” Foxx said.

Rep. Austin Scott (R-GA) quickly moved to strike Frost’s words from the record, prompting further exchanges.

“I have not gone over the cliff,” Frost replied.

“You have gone over!” Foxx responded. “We were going to be quiet, but you’ve gone over now!”

Frost stood by his statement, saying, “I meant every word.”

Foxx ultimately decided to let the remarks remain on the record.

“It might be good to leave your words,” she said.

“Because that’s how you feel. But you are not going to come into this room and impugn our integrity! You will not! We are pro-life people, from conception to natural death, most of us are.”

She added, “Don’t you come in here and say, we want to preserve life so people can get shot!”

Frost responded again: “That’s what I’ve seen.”

Following the exchange, Scott withdrew his motion to strike the remarks, and the hearing continued.

The tense moment in the committee reflects growing Democratic opposition to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which passed the Senate earlier this week.

The legislation includes a range of tax cuts and regulatory reforms supported by President Trump’s administration.

Democratic lawmakers have rallied against the bill, branding it the “big, ugly bill.” On Wednesday, members of the House Democratic Caucus held a press conference to denounce the measure.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said during the event that “every single House Democrat will vote ‘hell no’ against this one, big ugly bill.”

He added, “All we need are four House Republicans to join us in defense of their constituents who will suffer mightily from this bill.”

“It’s unconscionable, it’s unacceptable, it’s un-American, and House Democrats are committing to you that we’re going to do everything in our power to stop it,” Jeffries said, according to CBS News. “All we need are four Republicans, just four.”

Despite the objections, the legislation is expected to pass the House with a Republican majority.

The bill remains a central piece of President Trump’s economic agenda, with House leadership indicating they are prepared to deliver final passage ahead of Independence Day.
