A video circulating on social media shows agents with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) detaining an aide to New York Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler.
The DHS police handcuffed one of Nadler’s aides in his Manhattan office, which is also home to an immigration courthouse and DHS offices, the Gothamist reported Friday.
In the video shared on YouTube by WNYC, a woman can be seen being placed in handcuffs as someone in the background says “No she did not. That is not what happened.”
DHS officers reportedly entered the office and accused Nadler’s staff of “harboring rioters.” In the video, an officer can be seen trying to enter a private office while a staffer inside asks for a warrant.
“I’m a federal officer. We’re here checking on something. We have the right to check,” the officer tells her.
The staffer initially appeared to block the agent from entering but later allowed him through.

The DHS told the Gothamist an individual had blocked off police who were attempting to do a security check. Police were reportedly performing the check after receiving information that there were protestors inside the representative’s office.
Later in the day, there were protestors gathered outside the building, objecting to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the outlet reported.
The staffer was not arrested or charged with any crime, a DHS spokesperson and Nadler’s office confirmed to the Gothamist. The handcuffed woman told the outlet in a phone interview that “everything resolved.”
Two people present at the courthouse who were monitoring ICE activity told the outlet that ICE officers threatened to arrest them and other advocates. The witnesses added that a Nadler staffer invited those advocates inside.
“President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are sowing chaos in our communities, using intimidation tactics against both citizens and non-citizens in a reckless and dangerous manner,” Nadler said in a statement to POLITICO. ” In the most recent and deeply troubling incident, DHS agents forcefully entered my Congressional office and handcuffed a member of my staff.”
Nadler added that he was “alarmed by the aggressive and heavy-handed tactics DHS is employing in New York City and across the country.”
