As Pennsylvania emerges as a decisive battleground for the 2024 election, Democratic Senator John Fetterman offered insight into former President Trump’s robust support in the state, describing it as “astonishing.”

Fetterman’s comments came during an interview with the New York Times published Saturday, where he also expressed concerns about the recent endorsement of Trump by tech billionaire Elon Musk, predicting that Musk’s backing could influence Pennsylvania voters significantly.
Fetterman, who has been closely observing the political climate in Pennsylvania, pointed to the high level of enthusiasm for Trump among voters in rural and conservative areas. “Anybody who spends time driving around, and you can see the intensity. It’s astonishing,” he remarked.
Describing a visit to Indiana County, a conservative region of the state, Fetterman recounted encountering a “superstore” filled with Trump merchandise. “There was a superstore of Trump stuff, and it was a hundred feet long,” he said, adding that the range of Trump-related items, from T-shirts to bumper stickers, highlights the powerful presence Trump holds in certain areas of Pennsylvania. “It’s the kind of thing that has taken on its own life. And it’s like something very special exists there,” Fetterman said. “And that doesn’t mean that I admire it. It’s just — it’s real.”

Fetterman also addressed Musk’s recent public endorsement of Trump, emphasizing that Musk’s support could have significant sway in Pennsylvania.
Musk joined Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the site of an assassination attempt on Trump in 2020. “And now [Elon] Musk is joining him,” Fetterman noted. “To a lot of people, that’s Tony Stark. That’s the world’s richest guy. And he’s obviously, and undeniably, a brilliant guy, and he’s saying, ‘Hey, that’s my guy for president.’ That’s going to really matter.”
Fetterman expressed his surprise at Musk’s increasing involvement in the Trump campaign, referring to Musk as a “bigger star than Trump” in “some sense.”
He acknowledged that while endorsements often hold limited weight, Musk’s is likely to be impactful. “Endorsements, they’re really not meaningful often, but this one is, I think,” he admitted. “That has me concerned.”

We underestimate him “at our peril.”

The Pennsylvania senator also shared his view on the broader nature of the 2024 election, indicating that he believes voters are not focusing on specific policies but are rather confronted with a “stark choice” between Kamala Harris and Trump.
“It’s visceral,” Fetterman commented. “And that’s why the people that are left that haven’t made up their decision are going, you know, what do I want for the next four years? And I do believe enough people will choose Harris. But it’s going to be much, much closer than anyone would want.”
Polling data underscores Fetterman’s concerns about a tight race in Pennsylvania. The Real Clear Politics average currently shows Trump with a slight lead over Harris in the state, holding an advantage of less than one percentage point.

Both Trump and Harris have ramped up their campaign efforts in Pennsylvania, with multiple stops across the state over recent weeks.
Pennsylvania’s latest voter registration numbers indicate a notable shift toward the GOP, positioning the state as a crucial factor in determining the election’s outcome.
As Election Day approaches, Pennsylvania’s role in the presidential race continues to draw national attention, with both campaigns recognizing the significance of securing support from this pivotal state.
