Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona struggled to defend his party’s recent messaging on inflation during an interview Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union with hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

The interview followed a controversial post by the Democratic Party’s official account on X, which mistakenly blamed President Donald Trump for grocery price increases that occurred entirely during Joe Biden’s administration.

On Thursday, the Democratic Party’s verified X account shared a graphic labeled “Trump’s America” showing sharp increases in grocery prices between 2021 and 2024 — a timeframe during which President Biden was in office.

The post quickly drew criticism online for inadvertently drawing attention to one of the most persistent issues affecting American households under the Biden-Harris administration: rising grocery costs.

When asked about the post and the inflation issue during his CNN appearance, Sen. Kelly acknowledged the price increases but shifted focus away from the Biden-Harris administration’s economic record.

“There was inflation during the Biden administration. I track this pretty closely. You know, I know what ground beef and eggs and milk costs at the Safeway where Gabby [Giffords] and I shop in Tucson, Arizona,” Kelly told Tapper.

“They went up during the Biden administration. They went up some more. You know, you’re going to see prices go up and down.”

Kelly then pivoted to a discussion of President Trump’s trade policies, stating that potential tariff changes under Trump could result in even higher prices in the future.

“I think what’s important for the American people to know is that Donald Trump’s tariff policy is very likely to increase costs,” Kelly said.

“Going to take some time because of supply chains, stuff coming from, you know, in some cases from all over the planet.”

He added, “And his trade policy, for my constituents in Arizona, there are a lot of products that come across the southern border, agricultural products that create thousands and thousands of jobs, not only in Arizona, but in the state of Texas.”

Kelly also cited concerns about job losses due to current trade tensions and tariffs, saying, “We are facing right now some significant job loss. So when you think inflation is a problem for a family, somebody losing a job is even a bigger problem. And we’re trying to figure out how we navigate that with this administration.”

“I’ve spoken to the Secretary of Commerce about some of these tariffs, and we haven’t gotten the response,” Kelly added.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows inflation in the United States reached a 40-year high during the Biden-Harris administration, peaking in mid-2022, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Inflation drove up prices on essential goods such as groceries, gas, and household items, becoming a central concern for voters leading up to the 2024 election cycle.

Polling conducted throughout 2023 and 2024 consistently showed voters ranked the economy and inflation among their top issues, with a majority expressing dissatisfaction with President Biden’s economic management.

By contrast, CPI data showed that inflation had cooled significantly under President Trump’s administration.

By April 2024, the index had dropped to a four-year low.

Additional economic data from that period showed improvements in consumer sentiment, manufacturing output, and fuel prices.

Gasoline prices in particular fell to their lowest summer average since 2020, after surging during Biden’s first two years in office.

The Democratic Party’s X post remained active for several hours before being deleted, but screenshots of the chart circulated widely across social media platforms, drawing renewed attention to the party’s messaging struggles on economic issues.
