Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe this week, where he called for coordinated protests across the country in response to the ongoing immigration enforcement operations in Los Angeles.

The remarks come as the city continues to experience unrest following Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity and subsequent deployments of National Guard troops and U.S. Marines.

“This is a moment where we have to be on the streets all over the country to protest what’s happening to our immigrant community, but more broadly, to protest what’s happening to our democracy,” Murphy said during the live interview.

The senator also criticized President Donald Trump, referring to his administration as “the most corrupt administration in the history of the country.”

Murphy claimed the President was deliberately escalating tensions. “We are going to rise to this moment by being out there on the streets,” he continued.

“But ultimately, I think the country sees what Donald Trump is trying to do here. He’s looking for a fight.”

Murphy’s remarks were made amid ongoing riots and protests in Los Angeles, where law enforcement and federal agencies have responded to violent demonstrations targeting ICE facilities and federal officers.

Over the past several days, scenes of fires, vandalism, and clashes with law enforcement have emerged from several areas of the city.

While describing the protests, Murphy characterized them as largely peaceful despite reports of widespread property damage and violence against officers.

“There’s nothing in what he is doing that is about peace or about restoring order,” Murphy said, referring to President Trump’s decision to deploy federal troops.

“He’s taking a protest that is relatively isolated… People in Los Angeles over the weekend would tell you that 99% of them went about their day, and it was pretty normal because this is not an invasion that has taken over the entire city.”

And, of course, he blames Trump. Pretty clear to see where this is going:

As footage of burning vehicles played during the segment, Murphy began the interview by calling for peace from demonstrators.

The footage appeared to contrast with his message, showing active rioting in Los Angeles as he addressed viewers.

The senator’s call for nationwide demonstrations follows a broader push among some Democratic lawmakers to respond to federal immigration enforcement with mass mobilization.

President Trump has remained firm in his position, stating that federal authorities have the right to operate in any jurisdiction to enforce immigration laws.

Over the weekend, the Trump administration authorized the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to assist overwhelmed local law enforcement in Los Angeles.

The deployment came after reports that ICE agents had been targeted by violent protestors, and several government buildings were vandalized.

This is a whole-of-government approach to restore law and order. We are grateful to our military members and law enforcement who have acted with patriotism in the face of assault, taunts, and violence.

The Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice have not commented directly on Murphy’s remarks, but federal officials have continued to emphasize the legality of immigration enforcement operations and the necessity of protecting federal personnel and property.

At the time of publication, no official response had been issued by the White House regarding the senator’s comments.

Protests remain ongoing in Los Angeles and other major cities, with law enforcement continuing to monitor and respond to public safety concerns.
