Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville warned that a second term for President Donald Trump would be the most “serious crisis” the United States has ever faced.
The remarks came during a Wednesday appearance on former CNN host Chris Cuomo’s podcast, where Carville painted a dire picture of what he believes would happen if Trump returns to the White House.
Carville, who was a key strategist in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign, did not hold back in his assessment of the current political landscape.

“I think right now, and I’m going be very serious—I’m 80 years old—I think this is the most serious crisis that this country has ever faced,” Carville said.
Carville’s comments compared Trump’s second term to some of the most devastating events in American history, including the Civil War, the attack on Pearl Harbor, and the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Despite those historical crises, Carville insisted that Trump’s reelection poses a greater threat to the nation.
During his conversation with Cuomo, Carville attempted to justify his claim by pointing to Trump’s foreign policy and trade strategies.

“We have a president who is siding with Belarus and North Korea and Russia. I’m sorry, that’s a crisis,” Carville said.
“We have a president that has appointed some of the most incompetent people you can imagine to the United States Congress.”
Carville also argued that Trump’s trade policies could lead to economic instability.
“We have a president who is starting a trade war with our three biggest trading partners, and we’re watching the beginnings of which could be a financial meltdown that we can hardly imagine,” he continued.
He also accused Trump of disregarding constitutional principles.
“We have a president who does not respect our institutions, does not respect the limits to powers, the separation of powers that we have in our Constitution,” Carville said.
“I can think of no bigger crisis that this country has been in in my lifetime. Ever.”
Carville further compared Trump to past U.S. presidents, stating that while he disagreed with decisions made in previous administrations, he believed they acted in what they thought was the country’s best interest.
“I think we’ve had presidents who have made mistakes. The Iraq War being one—I thought they did it because they thought it would work, they didn’t do it because they thought it would hurt the United States. I think they were wrong. I am not convinced at all that Donald Trump loves the United States,” Carville said.

Carville’s remarks come after a decisive 2024 election in which Trump secured victory, drawing significant support from voters across party lines, including Black and Hispanic voters.
His claims reflect ongoing concerns from Democratic strategists who continue to grapple with Trump’s sustained influence and the shifting political landscape ahead of his second term.
