A CNN panel discussion took an unexpected turn late Monday when Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky made a startling claim that the U.S. military might “open fire on Americans” protesting President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans.
The statement came just hours after Trump confirmed he would use military assets to aid in the deportation of illegal migrants as part of his administration’s strategy to address the border crisis.
Roginsky, co-founder of the nonprofit group Lift Our Voices, declared that protests would erupt across the country if Trump’s plan goes forward.

“I promise you with every fiber of my being, because I’ll probably be one of those people, that if anyone comes for these people and tries to drag them out by force, there will be protests,” Roginsky said. “American citizens will prevent these little kids from being dragged out of these shelters.”
Her comments shocked fellow panelists, particularly when she escalated her rhetoric. “What is going to happen to these people? What is going to happen to the military when the military opens fire on us?” she asked.
Panelist Scott Jennings, visibly taken aback, quickly interjected, saying, “No one is … we’re way down a rabbit hole here.”
Trump’s announcement earlier Monday confirmed he would declare a national emergency upon returning to the White House in January.
The declaration would facilitate what he has described as the “largest deportation effort in history,” aimed at addressing illegal immigration and ensuring border security.
Responding to a Truth Social post from Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton, Trump wrote, “TRUE!!!” Fitton had expressed optimism about the incoming administration’s plans, stating, “GOOD NEWS: Reports are the incoming @RealDonaldTrump administration prepared to declare a national emergency and will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program.”
Roginsky’s remarks reflected a growing divide over the policy.
She argued that Trump’s deportation initiative would primarily target “women and children,” dismissing concerns that dangerous criminals or terrorists might be among the individuals entering the U.S. illegally.
“I’m sorry, I live next to these people. I can tell you, they are women and children. Are there terrorists among them? I don’t know,” Roginsky said. “But I can tell you … practically speaking, there will be people, American citizens who will prevent these little kids from being dragged out of these shelters.”

Roginsky’s remarks were met with swift criticism from conservative commentators, who argued that her claims about the military targeting protesters were inflammatory and unfounded.
Supporters of Trump’s immigration policies emphasized that the focus of the deportation plan would be on addressing security threats and enforcing existing immigration laws.
The Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the border crisis has remained a contentious issue, with many Republicans citing record numbers of illegal crossings and accusing the outgoing administration of lax enforcement.
Trump’s plan has drawn praise from his supporters, who view it as a necessary step to restore order and protect American communities.
As the incoming administration prepares to implement its policies, the debate over immigration enforcement is expected to intensify.
Trump’s use of military resources to assist in deportations signals a dramatic shift in federal immigration strategy, ensuring that this issue will remain a central focus of his presidency.
