Democratic Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens is facing another controversy after being caught earlier in the week touting a fake endorsement of her Senate campaign.

Stevens blasted former Republican Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers, the Trump-endorsed candidate in the race, on Thursday for Rogers calling on the president to send the National Guard to Detroit to combat crime. The Michigan Democrat posed a similar request to deploy troops to another crime-ridden city in 2016 when former President Barack Obama was in office — from the same social media account. “Mike Rogers just called to deploy the National Guard to Detroit,” Stevens wrote on the social media platform X on Thursday. “Was wrong in [1967] and it’s wrong now.”

“This is exactly why I introduced a bill to stop Trump’s abuse of power, because this chaos won’t stop in someone else’s community,” Stevens continued. “It’ll come to ours unless we do something.”

Stevens, however, called for sending the National Guard into Chicago in the wake of 60 people being shot over the July 4 weekend in 2016. The Michigan Democrat did not win election to Congress until Nov. 2018.

“Enough is enough,” Stevens wrote on social media at the time.

Stevens also introduced legislation in June that would prohibit Trump from deploying the military to states without the permission of the governor, “We need to shut down Trump’s chaos agenda.”

In August, she slammed Trump for threatening to send troops into Chicago over the wishes of Democratic Illinois Governor JB Pritzker who has resisted the president’s efforts to crackdown on crime.

“[N]ow he is threatening an unwelcome and dangerous show of force in Chicago,” Stevens wrote in a press release on Aug 26.

At least 58 people were shot in the city over Labor Day weekend — a similar amount to those wounded in Chicago during the July 4th weekend in 2016 that prompted Stevens’ original tweet.

“One thing you can count on from Michigan Democrats is their hypocrisy. They cared enough about violent crime in Chicago to call for help but not the people getting assaulted, robbed, and killed in our own backyard,” Rogers campaign spokesperson Alyssa Brouillet said in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation. “This is just one more reason not to trust them.”

Stevens is vying for the Democratic nomination in a crowded field, which also includes Bernie Sanders-endorsed public health official Abdul El-Sayed and liberal Democratic state legislator Mallory McMorrow.

The congresswoman came under criticism on Tuesday for claiming the endorsement of Berrien County Commissioner Chokwe Pitchford, calling his service “inspiring” in a since-deleted post. Pitchford quickly issued a statement refuting the fake endorsement. He also suggested that he would not have chosen Stevens to support among the three well-known candidates in the primary contest.

Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), a top Republican super PAC involved in Senate races, blasted Stevens’ series of gaffes in a statement to the DCNF.

“Haley Stevens continues to run the worst Senate campaign in America,” SLF communications director Chris Gustafson wrote.

A spokesperson for Stevens did not respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
