Tim Walz, the Democratic governor of Minnesota and former running mate to Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, has stated that he would “certainly consider” a bid for the presidency in 2028. His remarks come despite the resounding defeat he and Harris faced in November.

Elon Musk Called This Financial News ‘Terrifying’

During an interview with The New Yorker Radio Hour on Sunday, Walz, 60, addressed the possibility of a future presidential run.

“Look, I never had an ambition to be president or vice president. I was honored to be asked,” he said. “If I feel I can serve, I will. And if nationally, people are like, ‘Dude we tried you, and look how that worked out,’ I’m good with that.” He added, “If I think I could offer something … I would certainly consider that.”

Walz has recently ruled out a run for U.S. Senate in 2026 following Democratic Senator Tina Smith’s decision not to seek re-election.

Though he remains eligible for a third term as governor, he has not announced whether he will run again.

Pressed by host David Remnick for a clearer answer on his political future, Walz said, “I’ll do whatever it takes.”

He acknowledged that he was “not arrogant enough to believe there’s a lot of people that can do this,” but left the door open to a presidential campaign if he believes he has “the right skill set for the moment.”

Walz was chosen as Harris’ running mate after she secured the Democratic nomination but was widely seen as an underwhelming pick.

His selection raised questions, particularly after Harris passed over Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who leads a crucial swing state.

Walz failed to energize the Democratic ticket, lost his debate against Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance, and even lost his home county, Blue Earth County, in Minnesota.

Reflecting on the Democratic loss, Walz admitted, “It’s one I’ll take with me to the grave.”

He added, “An old white guy who ran for vice president, you’ll land on your feet pretty well. But I still struggle with it … when I see Medicaid cuts happening, when I see LGBTQ folks being demonized, when I see some of this happening, that’s what weighs on me personally.”

Before becoming governor in 2018, Walz served in Congress for 12 years.

However, he dismissed any notion of returning to Washington by running for the Senate seat being vacated by Smith.

“I would rather eat glass,” he said, explaining why he will not enter the race.

If Walz chooses to run for a third term as governor in 2026 and serves through 2031, he would become the longest-serving governor in Minnesota history.

For now, his political future remains uncertain, though he has made clear that he has not ruled out a presidential bid in the next cycle.
