Miami-Dade County commissioners have approved a proposal to rename Palm Avenue in Hialeah as “Donald J. Trump Avenue,” in recognition of the president-elect’s influence and enduring support in South Florida.

The County Commission voted 9-1 in favor of the initiative on Tuesday, following Hialeah’s request to commemorate Trump’s legacy.
The move underscores the region’s shifting political landscape, where Trump has built strong Republican support.
“Today, we ratified the City of Hialeah’s initiative to honor President Trump’s legacy of championing freedom and opportunity by co-designating Palm Avenue—a vital artery in our community—as ‘President Donald J. Trump Avenue,’” Commissioner Kevin Marino Cabrera announced on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Cabrera, a Republican and sponsor of the measure, emphasized the historical significance of the decision.
The vote, which passed despite the County Commission’s Democratic majority, highlights bipartisan support for the renaming.

Of the commission’s 13 members, seven are Democrats.
However, the motion received affirmative votes from four Democrats alongside five Republicans, including Commission Chair Anthony Rodriguez and Commissioners Juan Carlos Bermudez, Raquel Regalado, and Roberto Rodriguez.
The only dissenting vote came from Marleine Bastien, a Democrat representing northern Miami and nearby communities.
While acknowledging Trump’s victory, Bastien expressed concerns about the impact of his presidency.
“I respect the fact that President Trump won the popular vote, the Electoral College, and Miami-Dade County,” Bastien said after the vote.
“However, his victory does not erase the collective trauma that immigrants and citizens alike felt during this election cycle.”
The renaming reflects Trump’s growing popularity in Miami-Dade County, which flipped Republican during the 2024 presidential election.
Historically a Democratic stronghold, the county had not voted for a Republican presidential candidate since George H.W. Bush in 1988.
In the November 5 election, Trump captured 55.2% of the county’s vote, compared to Kamala Harris’s 43.71%, according to NBC Miami.
This marked a dramatic departure from previous elections. For example, in 2020, Joe Biden won Miami-Dade with 53.4% of the vote to Trump’s 46.1%.
Trump’s performance in Miami-Dade mirrored his broader success across Florida, where he secured 54.8% of the statewide vote, defeating Harris, who received 44.2%. This victory continued his trend of winning the state in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
Despite political differences, the proposal to rename Palm Avenue received bipartisan approval.
Republican Commissioner Kevin Cabrera defended the decision, arguing that it aligns with past precedents for honoring political figures.
“The renaming legislation shouldn’t be controversial because other politicians get street namings, too,” Cabrera said, referencing the County Commission’s 2016 decision to designate a Miami Gardens street as “President Barack and Michelle Obama Boulevard.”
The vote to rename Palm Avenue was grouped with other agenda items and passed without requiring individual votes from commissioners.
During the same meeting, commissioners also approved a proposal urging the state of Florida to honor Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson by renaming a state-maintained road in Miami Gardens after her.
The approval of “Donald J. Trump Avenue” highlights South Florida’s evolving political dynamics and serves as a symbolic acknowledgment of Trump’s enduring influence in the region.
