Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg beat his primary challenger Tuesday after becoming a national figure for indicting President Donald Trump ahead of the 2024 elections.
Bragg beat former Bronx Assistant District Attorney Patrick Timmins with 70% of Democratic primary voters for Manhattan’s top prosecutor, according to multiple reports. Timmins’ campaign focused on Bragg’s history of reducing punishments for certain crimes, accusing him of failing to keep neighborhoods safe. Conservatives have long criticized Bragg for bringing down conviction rates while throwing charges at Manhattan residents such as Marine veteran Daniel Penny who defended themselves against individuals threatening violence in public spaces.
Bragg also obtained convictions against Trump on dozens of counts for falsifying business records in May. A judge sentenced Trump to an unconditional discharge before he returned to office in January.
“I want to thank all the people of Manhattan for the opportunity they have given me to serve and for the faith they showed in me producing this great victory to continue doing the work to make Manhattan safer and one standard of justice for all,” Bragg said Wednesday morning in a statement posted by his campaign.
Timmins’ campaign did not respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
“Alvin Bragg was renominated by the same Democratic primary voters who nominated an inexperienced socialist antizionist to be mayor,” Seth Barron, a commentator who writes about New York City politics, told the DCNF, referring to New York State Rep. Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral primary win Tuesday night. “This activated base sees no problem with Bragg’s policies and probably thinks he needs to go much further to the Left.”
About 70% of registered voters in the borough are Democrats, nearly guaranteeing Bragg will win the November general election, according to the Associated Press. Bragg will face Republican Maud Maron, a former public defender.
“You shouldn’t have to lock up deodorant to run a store,” Timmins said in a June 18 X post. “Under Alvin Bragg, theft under $1,000 goes unprosecuted and petty crime is up 30%. As Manhattan District Attorney, I’ll prosecute all theft and protect NYC’s small businesses.”
