The state of California has the unique ability to produce and shelter delusional people.
You could walk through the streets of Hollywood, throw a nickel over your shoulder, and land a direct hit on a self-proclaimed influencer who’s either delusional enough to think they are the next Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman or are themselves Tom Cruise or Nicole Kidman. The same goes for politics. For whatever reason, and maybe it’s because California is an insulated, one-party state where its federal lawmakers face virtually no resistance from Republicans, the Golden State always manages to deliver national Democratic figures who are wholly disconnected from reality, let alone their fellow Americans.
Former Democratic California Rep. Katie Porter is one such person.
On Tuesday, Porter announced her bid to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom, framing her entire campaign as a Resistance fight between her state and President Donald Trump’s administration.
WASHINGTON, DC – JULY 25: U.S. Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) speaks during a news conference on Medicare Advantage plans in front of the U.S. Capitol on July 25, 2023 in Washington, DC. Joined by Medicare advocates, Congressional Democrats held a news conference “to call for action to stop wrongful delays and denials in private Medicare Advantage plans, to end to fraudulent overpayments, and to mandate accountability for the worst actors who hurt patients.” (Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images)
“In Congress, I held the Trump Administration’s feet to the fire when they hurt Americans,” Porter said in her video. “As Governor, I won’t ever back down when Trump hurts Californians — whether he’s holding up disaster relief, attacking our rights or our communities, or screwing over working families to benefit himself and his cronies.”
Porter unsuccessfully ran for Senator in 2024, losing out to another equally unlikable politician, Adam Schiff. Billionaires, Porter claimed, rigged her primary. Of course, they did.
Allegedly prone to fits of rage, Porter might actually be more delusional than former Vice President Kamala Harris, which is saying a lot. Although Harris convinced herself that she could overcome her severe flaws and convince Americans they do not matter — namely, her inability to produce an English sentence — if she ran at the state level, she would most certainly beat out her fellow Democratic challengers in a primary, owing to her (undeserved) name recognition. Porter, on the other hand, has neither star power nor charm. Only a charmless, angry energy. Like a political version of Nurse Ratched.
