Hours before President Donald Trump’s primetime address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, 22 Democratic senators launched a coordinated attack on his administration’s economic policies.
The senators, in nearly identical speeches, accused Trump of failing to control inflation and criticized cuts made by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
The coordinated effort, part of the “Shit That Ain’t True” campaign, featured video statements posted to X.

The videos began with a clip of Trump vowing to “bring prices down starting on day one,” followed by each senator reciting a scripted response.

“Shit that ain’t true, that’s what you just heard,” Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and 21 other Democratic senators said in unison.

“Since day one of Donald Trump’s presidency, prices are up, not down. Inflation is getting worse, not better… He’s pardoned violent criminals who beat police officers on January 6. He’s letting Elon Musk take a chainsaw, literally, to government programs that people need.”
The video campaign marks an escalation in Democratic opposition to Trump ahead of his address, which is not officially a State of the Union speech but follows the same format.

With Trump’s policy actions reshaping Washington, Democrats—who hold a minority in both the House and Senate—have struggled to counter his aggressive approach to governance.
The messaging shift comes as the Democratic Party faces record-low approval ratings. A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll conducted on February 24 found the party’s favorability at just 36%.
The economic focus of the senators’ statements suggests an attempt to shift attention away from social issues and refocus on concerns that resonate more broadly with voters.
“Trump, Musk and Republicans are taking services away from you in order to make room for tax cuts for billionaires like them,” Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly and the other participating senators stated. “The Republican plan is simple: families lose and billionaires win. And that’s the truth.”
Elon Musk, whose Department of Government Efficiency has been tasked with reducing wasteful spending, responded to the campaign on X.
“Puppets,” Musk wrote, referring to the Democratic senators after seeing a video of Warren and New York Sen. Chuck Schumer reading from the same script.
Who is writing the words that the puppets speak? That’s the real question. https://t.co/N8kaTj8vPU
