A video from a recent gathering of the Washtenaw County Democratic Party revealed candid discussions among Democratic leaders, including Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell, on how they plan to respond to President Donald Trump’s influence and policies.
The meeting, titled “Democratic Responses to Trump’s Attacks & Lessons Learned from 2024 MI House Races,” took place earlier this month and was attended by various activist groups and Democratic organizers.
The purpose of the meeting was to strategize and rally the Democratic base to counteract Republican efforts ahead of upcoming elections.

During the session, a young Black man shared his positive view of Trump’s decision to appoint Alice Marie Johnson as pardon czar.
Johnson, a Black woman, had previously received a full pardon from Trump for a non-violent drug offense after spending 22 years in prison.
The young man praised the appointment, stating, “Trump appointed a new pardon czar. And it’s a Black woman, a real Black woman. And so I bring that up to bring up the point that the Republicans are kind of moving in on what is traditionally like a progressive concept, right? You know, giving people back there for very different reasons though, right? He’s trying to take care of the people that take care of him, whereas I don’t see very strong Democrat messaging on this point at all.”

His comment caused tension in the room, as another individual attempted to take the microphone from him while the audience voiced their disapproval.
The comment highlighted a shift in criminal justice reform efforts, with the young man pointing out the contrast between the Republican-led initiative and the lack of a strong response from the Democratic side.
Rep. Dingell, who was also present, spoke about the importance of strategies to combat Trump’s influence, emphasizing that the fight against the president would require more than just legislative efforts.
She suggested the need for a comprehensive approach, including legal actions and public education campaigns.
“We need to make sure it’s in every one of those damn conservative, wherever they’re communicating, and we have to be the voices that are smart, targeted and effective, and fighting back,” Dingell stated.
She went on to explain that the strategy would involve a combination of litigation, legislation, public education, advocacy, and communication.
“We litigate. We legislate. We only need three votes, three Republican votes. I don’t know that we can ever get the person that’s closest to us, but he is chair of Ed and Labor, but we need to be targeting someone that may want to run for governor,” Dingell added, highlighting the tactical approach of targeting key Republican figures.
Dingell also underscored the need for Democrats to be proactive in educating the public about their policies and effectively advocating for their causes.
“We need to be targeting all that. Then we need to be educating, that’s raising the stories, that’s telling people what is happening. We’ve got to be advocating, and we gotta be communicating. So that’s the five-prong strategy, litigate, legislate, educate, advocate, communicate,” Dingell said.
Then Dingell muttered, “I hope nobody taped that,” as she wrapped up her remarks, hinting at the behind-the-scenes nature of her comments.
The video from the meeting, which was posted online, has sparked conversations within the Democratic Party about their approach to fighting Trump and the strategies they plan to employ in the upcoming elections.
With a focus on legal challenges, targeted legislative efforts, and public advocacy, the Democratic Party is preparing for an ongoing battle against the Trump administration’s policies and influence.
