A Democratic lawmaker’s push to impeach President Donald Trump has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle and sparked questions about his own grasp of basic facts within his district.

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI), a first-term member of Congress from Michigan, announced in late April that he would introduce articles of impeachment against President Trump.

The move came without support from Democratic leadership and has quickly become a source of controversy and ridicule, even among his own party.

Thanedar’s announcement followed an earlier statement by Rep. Al Green (D-TX), who had also vowed to introduce impeachment articles against President Trump by the end of April. Green, however, failed to follow through on his promise.

With Thanedar now taking the lead, the effort has failed to gain traction and has drawn quiet opposition from fellow House Democrats.

According to multiple reports, some Democratic lawmakers have privately dismissed Thanedar’s actions as unserious and potentially damaging to the party’s broader agenda.

Several Democrats are reportedly prepared to vote against the articles if they are brought to the floor, with some referring to the move as a “stunt.”

Adding to the controversy, Thanedar recently faced an uncomfortable moment during a media interview.

A reporter asked him to name major cities within the congressional district he represents.

Thanedar was unable to answer directly and instead deflected by saying, “I’m not here to answer a quiz.”

The exchange has circulated widely on social media and sparked additional criticism, with many questioning whether Thanedar is sufficiently familiar with his own district.

Thanedar represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, which includes parts of Detroit and surrounding communities.

His inability to name key cities in the district during the interview has raised concerns about his readiness and focus as a member of Congress.

The failed impeachment push has also drawn attention to the broader Democratic strategy, as party leaders have shown little interest in pursuing action against President Trump, who returned to the White House following the 2024 election.

Democratic leaders have not endorsed Thanedar’s resolution and have not indicated any plans to schedule a vote.

President Trump’s allies in Congress have dismissed the effort as political theater.

Multiple Republicans have pointed to Thanedar’s lack of support among fellow Democrats as further evidence that the articles have no path forward.

While Thanedar has continued to promote the resolution publicly, its future remains unclear.

With few public endorsements and reported resistance within his own party, the articles appear unlikely to advance out of committee.

As of mid-May, no formal text of Thanedar’s articles of impeachment has been introduced in the House of Representatives.

A spokesperson for the congressman did not respond to requests for comment on the status of the resolution or on the interview in which he was unable to name cities within his district.

The incident has renewed scrutiny of lesser-known lawmakers attempting to make headlines through high-profile legislative efforts that lack broader political or procedural support.
