Democrat Senator Breaks Ranks, Publicly Calls Out Schumer’s Leadership

The knives are out for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer—this time from his own side.

As reported by The Independent Journal Review, Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow, a far-left Democrat flirting with a U.S. Senate bid, is publicly calling for Schumer to step aside.

In a revealing interview with POLITICO, McMorrow bluntly said she wouldn’t support Schumer as conference leader if she made it to the Senate.

It’s the latest in a growing pattern of Democrat infighting, as the party struggles to mask its identity crisis while trying to fend off President Donald Trump’s America First movement and the GOP-controlled Congress.

For McMorrow, Schumer’s choice to vote with Republicans to keep the government running was apparently the last straw.

“Chuck Schumer has dedicated his life to public service and fought a lot of really great fights, and it can be time to step back.”

She added that she wants someone who better understands “this moment.” Translation: she wants someone even more progressive.

McMorrow joined the usual left-wing chorus—Nancy Pelosi, Tim Walz, and activist groups who never saw a culture war they didn’t want to fight—in lashing out at Schumer for working with Republicans.

According to her, it’s no longer about cooperation; it’s about political purity and doubling down on the radical base.

“There seems to be a lack of recognition that this is no longer the Republican Party. This is a MAGA party.”

As if voters didn’t know that already—and as if it were a bad thing.

What’s more troubling is how openly McMorrow embraces the fringe. She has no interest in moderating on cultural issues that have been dragging Democrats underwater with swing voters.

Senator Mallory McMorrow speaks to the crowd on Monday, May 22, 2023, outside of the 44th District Court in Royal Oak.

Instead, she repeated tired talking points defending biological males competing in women’s sports—an issue roughly 8 in 10 Americans oppose, according to a recent New York Times/Ipsos poll.

Rather than acknowledge that maybe voters are rejecting the Democrats’ radical gender ideology, McMorrow deflected with a historically absurd comparison:

“Now, whether it’s in Nazi Germany with Jews, whether it’s the pushback against desegregation and unwillingness to integrate our schools, to attacks on the LGBTQ community.”

This kind of over-the-top rhetoric shows just how far gone some Democrat hopefuls have become.

Meanwhile, Schumer’s grip on power looks increasingly fragile. Even Colorado Senator Michael Bennet, hardly a firebrand, hinted that it might be time for Chuck to pack it up.

“It’s important for people to know when it’s time to go.”

McMorrow’s Senate ambitions were triggered after Democratic Senator Gary Peters announced his retirement. She quickly reached out to Senate Democrats’ campaign machine, signaling her interest.

She’ll likely face competition from Rep. Haley Stevens, while Pete Buttigieg—Michigan’s newest part-time resident—has already ruled himself out.

No response yet from Schumer’s office, but if this Democrat-on-Democrat trend keeps up, they might want to start writing his political obituary.
