A Virginia Democratic state senator claimed the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement was to blame for a Fairfax County mother being murdered by an illegal immigrant.
Stephanie Minter, a 41-year-old mother from Fredericksburg, was found with multiple stab wounds on Richmond Highway in Fairfax County on Feb. 23, according to a Fairfax County Police Department press release, quickly charging Abdul Jalloh, an illegal migrant from Sierra Leone with a long criminal history, with Minter’s murder. Democratic State Sen. Scott Surovell said the murder, which has been blamed on Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano, happened because United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was carrying out operations in Minnesota and Memphis. “They had the opportunities, they were notified electronically repeatedly that he was being arrested repeatedly, and they elected not to do anything about it,” Surovell claimed. “Why was that? Maybe it’s because they’re busy shooting poets. Maybe it’s because they were busy shooting nurses. Maybe it’s because they’re busy with their surge in Minnesota or Memphis or all the other places instead of doing what the president promised he was going to do when he ran for office, which was to capture and deport violent undocumented immigrants, which apparently is not what they have an interest in doing, because 75% of people they picked up don’t have any criminal history.”
“And from my perspective and my district’s perspective, there’s a dead person in my district because ICE seems focused on doing things other than what the president promised and what they should be doing, which is focus on keeping us safe,” Surovell continued. “Madam President, that’s what bothers me about the conversation over the last 48 hours, and the people in my district want to be safe and they want ICE to focus on the right people and not focus on people that are just out trying to live their lives. That’s all I want to say, Madam President.”
The presence of hundreds of federal law enforcement personnel in Minnesota became controversial following the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good by DHS agents in January during confrontations between the agents and so-called “rapid response networks” opposed to the illegal immigration crackdown.
Descano, who was elected with the support of left-wing billionaire George Soros, repeatedly dropped charges against Jalloh, despite multiple pleas from law enforcement and local officials. Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger of Virginia, who terminated agreements local law enforcement agencies had with ICE, has said she will not honor an ICE detainer without a “judicial warrant.”
