Politics is downstream from culture, the Late Andrew Breitbart used to say, and that axiom can also be applied to the new-look Democratic Party on display since the beginning of Trump 2.0.
There are many strengths and talents Donald Trump possesses, but right at the top of the list is his innate ability to make liberal Democrats, elected and in the resistance media, lose their ever-lovin’ minds. Whether it’s subjecting themselves to marketing strategies you’d laugh at if employed in a junior high school class president campaign, or whether it’s staking out the 15% ground on 85-15% issues cutting against them with the American people, Donald Trump’s superpower has been to provide the runway for Democrats to self-destruct as a serious political party…with one exception.
Before the joint address to Congress, which we’ll get to in a moment, not one, not two, but 22 Democrats participated in a stunt, ostensibly believing it was going to move the public opinion needle away from Trump before the speech. It was filmed exactly the same way – the same script, the same uber-cool millennial style of social media posts – holding the lapel mic up to their mouth to demonstrate their sincerity.

It turned out to be the worst group think exercise imaginable, and the blowback to it was spectacular. And that was before the speech. You’ll notice that John Fetterman was not one of the 22 Democrats who participated in that nonsense. David has a good piece on that from last night.
Right at the beginning of the speech, not even three minutes in, Houston Rep. Al Green, who is working on his 11th term in the House of Representatives and has spent roughly 40% of his political career trying to impeach Donald Trump, made his mark. He dressed up appropriately for the event, showed up in the House to watch the President give his address, and then decided to stand up and shout down Trump, waving his cane at him in fury.
🎉 FUN FACT 🎉
Al Green famously tried to impeach Donald Trump BEFORE he took the oath of office
(Before Trump served a SINGLE day as POTUS)

You’ll notice a brief chorus erupt from the Republican side, singing the old Steam classic, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye.” Once Green was removed, he immediately went to the media gaggle in Statuary Hall, none of whom had anything critical to say to him, but instead took dictation that Green planned to file articles of impeachment against Donald Trump. That’s not exactly breaking news, and it’s going to be interesting to see how exactly he accomplishes that not being a member of the majority party. He seems to have missed the memo that his side lost this last election. You know what else Rep. Green missed? One of his constituents.

The House today is considering whether to censure Rep. Green for his outburst. I’m of two minds about it. It sure would be fun to watch the Democrats stew in their juices for a bit as this process plays out, but the whole affair is pretty silly and dumb, and there’s bigger fish to fry, like figuring out how to get a 2-seat majority to agree on permanent tax cuts in a reconciliation bill.
But even the censure debate on the floor is mildly entertaining. Republican Dan Newhouse and Democrat Jim McGovern were getting into it, and McGovern deployed the whataboutism strategy of the President using the address, and the bully pulpit, to cite a racial slur against a member by name.
Newhouse: I have never, ever seen a member of congress escorted from the floor
McGovern: Well, you know what’s never happened in my career, a president of the United States coming before a joint session of congress and insulting members by name, individually, shouting slurs at… pic.twitter.com/d6EKsboHkl

Lefty Twitter is circulating this clip as if this is a point for their side. It’s nonsense, of course. Green’s outburst, the one that caused his removal by the Sergeant at Arms, occurred about 90 minutes before Trump’s engagement with Chief Elizabeth Warren. It’s so weak of an argument, you can’t even make tea.
As for the Pocahontas line Trump used on Chief Warren, keep in mind this is a Senator who claimed her racial heritage as a Native American to gain access to college and was recognized as a woman of color by her alma mater, Harvard. She is 1/1024th Cherokee. Pocahontas was a Powhatan princess. It’s not a slur. It’s using a recognizable and respected Native American in history to make the point that Chief Warren is a fraud.
It’s not as though Chief Warren had once claimed to be Latino, and Trump made a reference about her time picking crops. That would be a racial slur. It sure would be bad if someone else said something like that at an august institution like Harvard.
Alejandro Mayorkas suggests that American views of immigrants will change when there is no one to pick their food or work manual labor:

Chief Warren used her moment of protest during Trump’s part of the speech on Ukraine to do the one-person hand clap. Trump, in really the only moment where he took the bait from Democrats all night, looked at her dismissively, used his nickname on her, and said she probably wants the war to continue for another five years. Chief Warren actually said, yes, that’s her preference.
Senator Warren, aka Pocahontas, claps & says, “you bet” when President Trump asks if we want the war in Ukraine to last 5 more years.

“You bet,” she said. Leave it to the Chief. She’s willing to fight Russia down to the very last Ukrainian and very last American dollar. Our military? She wants that gutted.
The speech by Trump was so thoroughly masterful in that he knew exactly how the Democrats were going to react to it, and wrote a speech to play into that predictability. Trump, once Green was removed, offered the Democrats to join with him, even if only for one night, to celebrate the best of America. They refused. Trump knew they’d scoff at him, and so he proceeded to line up issue after issue on which the Democrats have abandoned the middle to defend the extreme position, forcing them to sit on their hands or wave their Ping Pong paddles.
Will Cain’s team on his Fox radio program compiled the list, and it’s really quite breathtaking when you see it all in one place. Here’s what you have to be against, or not applaud, in order to be a mainline Democrat in today’s United States.
– The capturing of an ISIS terrorist that masterminded the Abbey Gate attack
– A young boy fighting brain cancer
– A call to lower taxes for middle-class Americans
– Americans joining the military in record numbers
– Law and order
– Taking down illegal revenge porn
– Protecting women’s sports
– The United States of America
– Working together to Make America Great Again
– Ending the harmful electric vehicle mandate
– Cutting regulations to unleash American prosperity
– Ending censorship and bringing back free speech
– Ending discriminatory “diversity, equity, and inclusion”
– Recognizing only two sexes
– Defeating inflation
– Unleashing American energy
– Ending waste, fraud, and abuse in government
– Ending taxes on tips, overtime, and seniors’ Social Security
– Bringing manufacturing home to America
– Securing historic investments in American chip manufacturing
– Removing illegal alien killers, rapists, and drug dealers from our streets
– Securing our border
– Declaring the brutal Tren de Aragua gang as a Foreign Terrorist Organization
– Waging war on the deadly cartels trafficking deadly drugs into our country
– Punishing cop killers with the death penalty
– Promoting health and wellness among Americans
– Protecting our kids from radical gender ideology
– Ending the sexual mutilation of America’s youth
– The return of American Marc Fogel
– Declaring America’s youth are perfect as God made them
– Ending wokeness in the U.S. military
– Restoring American shipbuilding
– A student getting accepted to West Point
– Improving America’s defenses
– Pursuing peace in Ukraine
That’s quite impressive, actually. My guess is if each one of these were posed as a polling question, the Democrats would be on the minority side of a very long and lopsided survey. But at least they seem to have their rebranding well underway to compensate for taking the wrong side on everything.

I speak on behalf of all Republicans by giving our stamp of approval on this new marketing campaign for the Democrats. Don’t let this thin veneer of mockery on our side cover up how much we’re actually quaking in our boots. You’re finally touching the nerve center of where real America is, and we are insanely jealous that you’ve boxed us out of being able to resonate with the country on all the important issues this country faces.
I mentioned one exception, however. One fly in the ointment. My governor, California’s Gavin Newsom, is in the middle of his own rebranding project. He’s launched a podcast, and with it, his presidential ambitions for 2028. If there were a podcast about a snake shedding its skin as it continues to grow, slither, and feed on vermin, it would be the Gavin Newsom show. The country’s most liberal governor, with a long, long track record to prove it, is now suddenly against all the crazy stuff he used to be for.
Gavin Newsom tells Charlie Kirk that he is against trans women in girls sports. He also denounces Latinx, admits BLM is corrupt, and calls defunding the police lunacy.

Don’t let him fool you. He can be just as winsome as a car salesman…until you’re in the sweat box haggling over the fine print in the purchase agreement. He hasn’t changed his spots at all. He’s just saying what he thinks the country wants to hear, believing he can parrot that back, flash the pearly whites and the perfectly-coiffed hairdo, and win the White House and reverse all of Trump’s damage.
I don’t believe Gavin 2.0 will work. He still has a record of disaster in his wake that would be a dream for any oppo researcher on the GOP side. But he, along with Senator Fetterman, seem to be the only two Democrats out there recognizing the current strategy on the left isn’t working at all, and both are willing to try something different. They’re the ones we on the right have to watch the most.
