As President Donald Trump returns to the White House, Democrats are facing mounting challenges ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
New polling shows voter confidence in the Democratic Party has deteriorated to its lowest level in more than three decades, with the GOP gaining the upper hand on key issues that traditionally decide elections.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal survey, just 33% of voters hold a favorable view of the Democratic Party, while 63% view it unfavorably—the worst numbers recorded for the party in Journal polling going back to 1990.

Only 8% of respondents said they view the party “very favorably,” compared to 19% who feel the same about the Republican Party.
In contrast, the Republican Party has managed to maintain a smaller unfavorable margin of 11 points, while President Trump’s personal ratings reflect a 7-point gap between favorable and unfavorable views—both significantly better than current Democratic standing.
Democrats had hoped to ride a wave of backlash against the president and regain control of the House of Representatives in 2026, as they did during the 2018 midterms.
However, the poll shows that the party has not yet made the critical step of convincing voters they can perform better than Republicans on the issues that matter most.

On major policy areas including the economy, inflation, trade, and foreign policy, voters in the poll said they trust Republicans over Democrats to manage those concerns in Congress.
The numbers reflect ongoing voter dissatisfaction with Democratic messaging, leadership, and policy proposals heading into the next election cycle.
CNN’s senior data reporter Harry Enten echoed the grim outlook, saying the Democratic Party is “breaking records in a way you don’t want to break records.”

The party’s public image problems are compounded by internal divisions, unclear messaging, and a lack of national leadership figures capable of rallying broad voter support.
Even some long-time media critics of President Trump have acknowledged that the political momentum may be shifting.
Former MSNBC host Chris Matthews, who previously called Trump’s 2017 inaugural speech “Hitlerian,” said he no longer puts much stock in polling that underestimates the president.
Matthews said Trump “knows the pulse of the country,” and added that public sentiment appears to be trending in his direction on core issues.
The Democratic Party’s current struggle comes amid a broader realignment in American politics, with more voters identifying with economic and cultural positions advanced by the Trump administration.
Despite attempts by some within the Democratic Party to recalibrate strategy, the party continues to face questions about its direction, messaging, and ability to connect with mainstream voters.
Democratic strategists are still working to identify a clear path forward as the president and congressional Republicans continue to push an agenda focused on economic recovery, border security, and reducing inflation.
The Journal poll suggests that until Democrats offer a compelling alternative, the public will continue to view the GOP as the more capable party on the issues shaping the national conversation.
The 2026 midterm elections will serve as a crucial test for whether Democrats can rebuild voter trust or whether Republicans will solidify their position under President Trump’s leadership.
For now, public opinion remains firmly against the Democratic Party, with no immediate signs of reversal.
