Former Obama adviser and current CNN commentator Van Jones made a blunt admission on Sunday about the state of the Democratic Party, declaring that they are “screwed” as they struggle with internal crises and messaging failures.

Speaking on CNN Newsroom, Jones acknowledged the challenges Democrats face following the 2024 election and President Donald Trump’s return to office.

“Look, man, we’re screwed,” Jones said. “I mean, Democrats don’t know what to do. This is a nightmare. You know, somebody like Donald Trump, we thought we’d at least have Hakeem Jeffries in the Speaker’s chair to hold him back if we didn‘t have Kamala in there to do the right thing.”

Jones pointed to key failures within the Democratic Party that have led to their struggles.

He criticized the party for defending policies that have become increasingly unpopular with voters while alienating large portions of the electorate.

“Listen, the Democratic Party is going through a massive set of internal crises. You have a party that got trapped two ways,” Jones explained.

“One, defending a broken status quo that nobody likes because they thought that Donald Trump was going to make it worse. But when you’re defending the status quo, you’re going to lose.”

Jones further acknowledged that the party’s messaging has been ineffective, noting that their approach of labeling opponents as bigoted or intolerant has backfired.

“And then offending most people in the country, calling everybody sexist and racist and transphobic and every other name, and then saying, ‘please follow us.’ That’s not a good strategy, folks,” Jones said.

He admitted that the party’s failures have been self-inflicted, adding, “Defending a broken status quo and offending most of the country, turns out, is not as popular as my party thought it was going to be. And so it’s going to take a while for people to get it figured out.”

Jones’ remarks come as Democrats face increasing criticism for their conduct during President Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress earlier this month.

The party’s response, which included public disruptions and refusals to acknowledge parts of Trump’s speech, has drawn negative reactions from voters.

One of the most controversial moments came when Democrat Rep. Al Green interrupted Trump’s speech, leading to his removal from the House chamber.

According to a CNN instant poll, 80% of respondents believed Green’s behavior was inappropriate.

Additionally, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer led a chant that failed to gain traction, highlighting what some view as a lack of cohesion within Democratic leadership.

Polling data reflects the Democratic Party’s struggles. A Quinnipiac University survey conducted during Trump’s first week back in office showed that only 31% of respondents held a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party.

Democrats have also faced declining approval ratings following their handling of major issues, including inflation, border security, and energy policy.

Jones’ remarks serve as a rare acknowledgment from within the party that their current strategy is not working.

While Democrats scramble to redefine their messaging, Republicans remain in control of the presidency, both chambers of Congress, and the Supreme Court.

As Democrats attempt to regroup, Jones’ candid assessment underscores the challenges ahead.

With Trump’s administration moving forward and conservative policies gaining traction, the Democratic Party faces an uphill battle to rebuild voter confidence.
