Democrats Audition for Nomination in Munich

The fight to become the next Democratic candidate for president is well underway, and three (or four, if you count seditious Mark Kelly) of the top candidates flew to Munich to beclown themselves on the world stage. 

Gavin Newsom was slimy as ever, slandering Trump, America, ICE, and the Border Patrol, but to be fair to him, he was the best of a bad bunch. 

While in Germany, Gavin Newsom smears American law enforcement officers by comparing them to Nazis.

He joked about banning free speech in the United States, which is about as ironic as you can get, given that Germany conducts dawn raids on people for calling government officials “fat” or questioning why Germany is overrun with illegal migrant rapists. 

Gavin Newsom disparages America on the world stage and jokes that the world “pluralism” may be banned one day because President Trump is enforcing immigration laws — what the American people elected him to do.

The European Union is not the “good guy” in this fight.

The side that supports censorship and arresting people who publicly disagree with their elected leaders … historically those are the bad guys.

Of course, American liberals celebrate them for doing so. Perhaps “pluralism” isn’t a forbidden word yet in Germany, but “fat” is.

Still, Newsom had one big advantage that his fellow Democrats didn’t: glibness. He is as slick when he speaks as his hair is, and has the confidence of a con man when he spouts his nonsense. And since Democrats love nothing more than a good narrative, he had a good weekend in the city that spawned the Nazis. 

Not so much for Gretchen Whitmer and AOC, who came off like public school graduates who went on to major in Feminist Colonialism Studies or some similarly useful college major. 

Keep in mind that these answers came at the Munich SECURITY Conference, where Americans speaking and Europeans meeting there are whining that the Trump administration is bad at foreign policy and is straining our alliances.

Yep, if I were a European worried about whether they could count on a steady hand on the tiller in Washington, I would be rooting for Gretchen Whitmer, who defers to AOC on foreign policy matters. 

Many on the left are hoping AOC makes a run for the Senate or even the WH.

She finally got a chance to shine on a global stage in Munich and prove herself as presidential.

It was a disaster. Kamala 2.0.

The best you can say about their performances is that they should be thrilled that few people in America will ever see them. 

It very well might be that our allies in Europe might find any of these candidates a breath of fresh air, though, given the possibility that just about any European could lead them around by the nose and get them to do whatever they choose. That might be a mistaken assumption, though, as AOC is an outright communist whose advisors will want to slash US defense spending and who could make Biden’s advisors (or deputy presidents?) look like wise strategic thinkers. 

Whitmer would likely be less dangerous simply because she would be the mouthpiece of whatever establishment hacks got to her first. That’s just the sort of candidate the Europeans would like. 

Rubio, who spoke one day after the Democrats made themselves look like fools, looked like a giant. He articulated the Trump administration’s policies, which the establishment fundamentally misunderstands, perfectly. We are not anti-European; we are anti-EU establishment-types.

Bishop Barron understands what Rubio is talking about, which apparently is far too high above the heads of the elite imagination. While they are mired in the idea that civilization should be run by technocrats, the Trump vision is one of cultural rebirth.

I was impressed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s speech at the Munich Security Conference. He indeed addressed a number of particular political issues, but what most grabbed my attention was his stress on the common culture that unites Europe and America. He cited Dante, Shakespeare, the Sistine Chapel, Cologne Cathedral—even the Beatles as expressions of basic cultural intuitions that still inform the West. But he pressed the matter further, insisting, in the spirit of both Christopher Dawson and Pope Benedict XVI, that that culture is grounded ultimately in the Christian faith. It is simply the case that reverence for the dignity of the individual, for human rights, for political freedom, and for equality comes, in the final analysis, from the Christian Gospel. Basic to his presentation was the conviction that Europe and America will truly flourish when each re-discovers its spiritual mooring.

The decline of the West is rooted in the decline of Christianity. Not because one must be a Christian to live in Western societies—Newsom is not wrong when he notes that we live in a pluralistic society—but because the foundation for pluralism is a belief in human dignity and human rights, and those beliefs have grown from Christian roots. It’s no accident that Liberalism sprang from Christian societies, and as Christianity has been abandoned, the liberal societies have begun to wither and die. 

Marco Rubio’s Munich Speech was word perfect. The Americans couldn’t be clearer: they love Europe and Britain, they see themselves as the keepers of the flame of Western civilisation and they want us to pull our weight.

It’s been interesting to see the increasing clarity of thought among European Liberals (not leftists, but classical liberals), as they get a clearer view of what Trump is doing and trying to do for Europe. As the techno-socialists freak out, Trump-skeptics in the center-right are growing Trump-adjacent. Not because Trump has persuaded them to move right, but because they have quit interpreting him through the leftist lens. 

I am increasingly uninterested in what that portion of the Left thinks about anything.

The European technocrats may find Whitmer and AOC to be breaths of fresh air, but I suspect that the ordinary Europeans, or at least the ones who got to hear Rubio’s message, would probably be more attracted to his vision than AOC’s.

The level of arrogance and ignorance the Democrats put on display is, of course, unsurprising. These are not serious people; their goal is to loot our societies, not make them better. AOC famously attended the Met Gala as a guest of Anna Wintour in her “Tax the Rich” dress; tickets to the Gala cost $35,000, and the dress, which she “rented,” cost $20,000. 

It was a fine statement about her values and her way of thinking about them.

Unlike the Democrats in Munich, Rubio didn’t show up to see and be seen, to be loved by promising to be led. He came to sell a vision of what could be if we stand together, and it’s a damn good one.

Democrats believe they sent their best to Munich, and the sad fact is, they did.
