Democratic Rep. Sarah McBride of Delaware was not the first male to be elected to Congress. McBride was the first male attempting woman-face to be elected to Congress.
McBride appeared on The Ezra Klein Show to dissect “why the left lost trans rights.” McBride’s given name is Tim McBride. He changed his name and appearance as a young man after announcing he identified as transgender. (RELATED: Democrats’ New Political Football Could Bench Their Top 2028 Contenders)
“Candidly, I think we’ve lost the art of persuasion,” he told Klein, about the Democrat Party. Democrats are nearly as bad at persuading the public to like them as McBride is at persuading the public he’s a woman. Just months ago, McBride was the subject of a dust-up between colleagues squabbling over which title better suited the man: “Mister” or “Madame.”

“We’re not in this position because of trans people,” McBride claims. “There was a very clear, well-coordinated, well-funded effort to demonize trans people, to stake out positions on fertile ground for anti-trans politics and to have those be the battlegrounds — rather than some of the areas where there’s more public support.”
On the contrary, more exposure to “trans people” is precisely what’s turned public sentiment against their crusade. All it takes is one man in the woman’s restroom to sour an apolitical everywoman on the issue. Not to mention parents who discover their kindergartners are being educated in “LGBTQ Children’s Books.” The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) provides a helpful list of titles to avoid.
“And I think that allowed for the misinformation, the disinformation — that well-coordinated, well-funded campaign — to really take advantage of that lack of understanding,” McBride continues. His position appears to be that questioning the capacity of someone who eagerly mutilates his or her body is the result of a radical propaganda campaign.
Still, McBride admits that Democrats were premature in strong-arming the public into accepting gender theory.
“We became absolutist — not just on trans rights but across the progressive movement — and we forgot that in a democracy we have to grapple with where the public authentically is and actually engage with it,” he says.

“I also think there were requests that people perceived as a cultural aggression,” McBride considers. Hm. It’s easy to see why mandating people to use “preferred pronouns” at the cost of their livelihoods might be perceived as aggressive. McBride offers a reasonable description of why Democrats lost in 2024. His prescription for his party’s future is less sound.
“We decided that we now have to say and fight for and push for every single perfect policy and cultural norm right now, regardless of whether the public is ready,” he stated. “And I think it misunderstands the role that politicians and, frankly, social movements have in maintaining proximity to public opinion, of walking people to a place.” McBride styles himself a benevolent philosopher-king distilling transgender wisdom into manageable pieces for the public. But he still refuses to drill down to the first principles undergirding his belief that men are sometimes women. Assuming there are principles. (RELATED: Democrats Know They Have Problems. Do Their New Gurus Have Answers?)
“It all goes back to this notion of: Get government out, let people live their lives, and let families and individuals make the best decisions for themselves,” McBride advises. “That should be the through line of our perspective, a libertarian approach to allowing trans people to live fully and freely. There are some complicated questions, but those questions shouldn’t be answered by politicians who are trying to exploit those issues for political gain.”

McBride retreats behind the barrier of “live and let live.” This is a significant concession from the Democrats’ previous party line: “Give us positive affirmation or you’re literally Hitler.” But a libertarian makeover is as lazy as it is dishonest.
If a close friend began, seemingly at random, to maintain that the U.S. government was actually being operated by tiny blue parakeets, you might be concerned. You should be concerned, even if this person were otherwise unchanged. Detachment from observable reality is a glaring problem in and of itself. Democrats chose “diagnosable insanity” as their new civil rights frontier. Let them suffer the consequences.
