A one-off or a sign to come?

In a shocking election outcome, Democrat Mindy O’Neall flipped the Fairbanks, Alaska, mayoral seat Tuesday night for the first time in a decade, ousting the incumbent, conservative David Pruhs. O’Neall received 1,808 votes (54%) and Pruhs received 1,528 votes (45.7%), according to unofficial election night results from the city of Fairbanks. (Subscribe to MR. Pruhs chalked up his loss to low voter turnout and the fact that O’Neall had the backing of the state’s Democratic Party, calling it a “perfect storm.” In Fairbanks mayoral elections, a candidate’s party affiliation is not listed next to their name, but the city has elected Republicans since 2016.

“The race is over. Mindy O’Neall won. A few votes yet to be counted, but I’m down by 250 votes. The voters have spoken,” he told Alaska’s News Source.

“It was a perfect storm for her to take the seat, and she did that. So congratulations to Mindy O’Neall,” he said, Newsweek reported.

O’Neall “had a very engaged Democratic Party statewide and local parties to help her,” Pruhs argued. “When you have an entire state Democratic Party focused on one race, it’s hard to rebuff that.”

In recent years, voter turnout for city elections has generally hovered between 15 and 20% of registered voters, according to KUAC. Remarkably, no sitting mayor has been defeated in nearly ten years, the outlet noted.

Statewide, Alaska’s congressional delegation consists of three members: two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, and one Republican representative, Nick Begich III, who serves Alaska’s at-large district. Begich defeated Democrat Mary Peltola in the 2024 election, after Peltola had won a special election in 2022, when she broke the Republican Party’s nearly 50-year grip on the single House seat. In 2016, 2020, and 2024, President Donald Trump handily carried the state over Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris by double digits.

O’Neall will be sworn in later in October.
