A group of Democrat lawmakers and union activists faced widespread ridicule this week after delivering an off-key, awkwardly sung protest song attacking Elon Musk and President Donald Trump’s administration during a rally in Washington, D.C.
The event, organized by the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), was part of ongoing demonstrations against Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative.
The “Save the Civil Service” rally, held on Tuesday in downtown Washington, was the latest in a series of protests against Musk’s efforts to audit various federal agencies, including the Departments of Education and Defense, as well as a network of federally funded non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Musk’s audits have identified billions in wasteful spending, but opposition from Democrats and federal employee unions has remained strong.
At the rally, demonstrators attempted a reworked version of the protest song “Which Side Are You On?” with lyrics altered to target Musk and Trump. The performance quickly became the subject of online mockery.
“Tell me which side are you on? Which side are you on? We’ll fight against George. We’ll fight Elon Musk,” the group sang in unison. “No Elons kept within our walls. We’ll fight from dawn to dusk. Oh, which side are you on?”
The song continued with a direct attack on Trump:
“Trump’s coming for our unions. He wants us all to fail. He wants us to, to bow to him. But we want him in jail. Oh! Which side are you on? Which side are you on? Tell me which side are you on? Which side are you on? They say in the capital city there are no neutrals found. You’re either with the union or a scabby Musk bloodhound.”
The event was attended by prominent Democratic lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). Both leaders spoke in support of the unions and against Musk’s efforts to overhaul the federal bureaucracy.
Jeffries called Musk’s reforms “unacceptable and unconscionable” and vowed to fight against them.
“We are standing in solidarity with each and every one of you during this incredibly fragile time,” Jeffries told the crowd.
“We are going to stand with you until each and every one of those unlawful executive orders are fully and completely reversed, buried in the ground, never to rise again.”

The opposition to Musk’s role in the Trump administration has become a focal point for many Democrats. During a separate rally last week, Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) issued a fiery call to action, urging activists to fight back.
“We will see you in the courts, in Congress, in the streets,” Pressley said. She then took a personal jab at Musk, referring to him as a “Nazi nepo-baby.”
The rally and its musical protest quickly gained attention online, with many conservatives mocking the performance.
Critics pointed to the song as evidence of how detached some Democratic lawmakers have become in their opposition to Trump and Musk.
Despite the protests, Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency continues to conduct audits of federal agencies.
The findings so far have uncovered billions in questionable spending, raising further questions about government waste.
While Democrats push back against Musk’s initiatives, the Trump administration appears committed to continuing its efforts to streamline government spending and increase accountability.
The battle over these reforms is expected to intensify as more details from Musk’s audits come to light.
