What is wrong with the Democratic Party? That’s not a rhetorical question. The average voter could rattle off a list longer than the Magna Carta. The party has its lowest favorability ever. They don’t have a populist star. Young voters are increasingly conservative. You get the idea. But top Democrats aren’t consulting the average voter. They’re consulting the same people who gently ushered them over a cliff in the 2024 election cycle.

Democrats are at least acknowledging their brand is repulsive to independent and moderately left-of-center voters. They even attempted a too-literal, too-late remedy in the form of a new logo. It remains to be seen whether their approach to policy will also get a redesign. If so, they have more than a few leaders to retire. Former President Joe Biden appeared on The View with a brilliant insight into why Kamala Harris lost her presidential bid: sexism. Also, a little bit of racism, for good measure. Once upon a time, this sort of rhetoric might have swayed a guilt-ridden fence-sitter. That time has passed. Democrats face a critical decision. Do they ever want to win another election? If so, they need to make a critical pivot – not just in message, but in form. A tentative plan is shaping up within the party.
