The National Museum of American History, part of the Smithsonian Institution, has removed a temporary label referencing President Donald Trump’s two impeachments from one of its exhibits, prompting a wave of criticism from Democrat lawmakers and political figures.

According to a report by the Washington Post citing an unnamed source, the decision to take down the label came as part of an internal review of exhibit content.

The review reportedly followed pressure on Smithsonian leadership to remove art museum director Kim Sajet, who resigned in June.

President Trump had previously accused Sajet of being “highly partisan” and a supporter of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

The label, which was installed in September 2021, had addressed the impeachment proceedings that took place during President Trump’s first term.

It remained in place until July 2025.

A Smithsonian spokesperson told The Hill that the label was originally intended as a short-term addition to reflect current events but had stayed up longer than planned.

“In September 2021, the museum installed a temporary label on content concerning the impeachments of Donald J. Trump.

It was intended to be a short-term measure to address current events at the time, however, the label remained in place until July 2025,” the spokesperson said.

The museum’s American Presidency gallery, which opened in 2000, covers the history of the U.S. presidency and includes material on Congress, the Supreme Court, and public opinion.

According to the Smithsonian, many sections of the exhibit have not been updated since 2008, including the portion addressing presidential impeachments.

“A large permanent gallery like The American Presidency that opened in 2000 requires significant amount of time and funding to update and renew,” the spokesperson said.

“A future and updated exhibit will include all impeachments.”

Despite assurances that Trump’s impeachments would be included in the future overhaul of the exhibit, several Democrat officials criticized the decision to remove the temporary label.

Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) posted headlines from the New York Times on X referencing Trump’s impeachments and wrote, “This is what Donald Trump wants you to forget. America never will.”

Representative Mark Pocan (D-WI) also reacted on X, stating, “Trump can pretend it didn’t happen all he wants, but the facts don’t lie — he was impeached twice. I know. I was there.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office joined the criticism, referencing another frequently cited Democrat talking point: “Trump’s censoring the Smithsonian like it’s the Epstein List. History gets erased when it implicates him.”

In late March, President Trump signed an executive order instructing federal institutions to remove what he described as “divisive narratives” and “anti-American ideology.”

The Trump administration has previously criticized the Smithsonian for promoting content that framed American culture as inherently violent or racist.

The current version of the impeachment section in the exhibit reverts to its 2008 format, which includes references to the impeachments of former Presidents Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998.

It also notes that former President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974 before impeachment proceedings could be completed.

During his first term in office, President Trump was impeached twice by the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives.

The first impeachment, in 2019, involved allegations that Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate then-candidate Joe Biden.

The second, in 2021, was related to accusations that Trump incited the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Senate acquitted Trump in both cases.
