Democrats’ New Theory Of Politics Faces First Stress Test

Tuesday’s election is the Democratic Party’s first real chance at redemption. Republicans emerged the clear victors of election night 2024. Democrats faced humiliating defeats, losing control of the executive and legislative branches. 

The path out of the wilderness is thorny and still emerging, charted by reports like Welcome’s Deciding to Win. The 70-page-document urges Democrats to put the “cultural issues” on the backburner, instead focusing on “cost of living.” Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, has done just that. So has Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic nominee in the Virginia gubernatorial race. So has Democratic New Jersey Rep. Mikie Sherrill, who is running for governor of the state.
