Former Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus said on Sunday that the Democratic Party is in worse shape than before, arguing that it has moved too far from mainstream America.

Speaking on ABC News’ This Week, Priebus told Democrat panelists that their party is struggling with its message and has positioned itself on the “wrong side of normal.”

The Democratic Party has faced internal disagreements over why Kamala Harris lost to President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.

Dennis Quaid’s #1 Warning for Americans

While some members blame policy failures, others argue that poor messaging cost them key voters.

During the panel discussion, former Trump Justice Department spokesperson Sarah Isgur challenged the idea that Democrats could recover easily, stating that Americans had rejected the party’s establishment leadership.

Priebus then followed up, emphasizing that the situation was even worse for Democrats than just a messaging problem.

“I think it’s worse than that,” Priebus said.

“The Democrats have found themselves on the wrong side of normal. In spite of all the challenges that Donald Trump had, court cases, all the ups, the American people said, ‘I identify more with Donald Trump than I do with Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.’”

Priebus added that Democrats’ focus on progressive policies is alienating voters.

“They’re on the wrong side of all these cultural issues. Until they get that straight… progressivism on the left is dead.”

Throughout her campaign, Harris failed to connect with voters on core issues like the economy, inflation, and immigration.

Instead, she focused on race-based policies and refused to distance herself from controversial positions, such as funding transgender surgeries for illegal immigrants and reducing funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Post-election data reflected these challenges. According to The New York Times, Harris received 7 million fewer votes than Joe Biden did in 2020 and failed to match Trump’s gains.

She underperformed in three of the seven key swing states and lost in 80% of U.S. counties.

Democrats have continued to push progressive social policies, including gender identity policies for minors. However, polling suggests that these policies are unpopular with the American public.

An October Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll by Noble Predictive Insights found that 59% of respondents supported a federal ban on sex-change procedures for minors, including puberty blockers and gender reassignment surgeries.

Additionally, a Marquette Law School survey conducted from Jan. 27 to Feb. 5 found that 63% of the 1,018 adults polled supported the federal government recognizing only two sexes.

With the Democratic Party struggling to unify around a winning message, political observers are watching to see whether leadership will adjust its policies to align more closely with voter priorities or continue down a progressive path that has alienated much of the electorate.
