Democrat lawmakers say they are facing growing pressure from their own base to escalate their opposition to President Donald Trump’s administration, with voters demanding more aggressive, and in some cases confrontational, tactics to counter the Republican majority in Washington.

In a report published by Axios, several Democrat members of Congress said they are hearing from constituents who are frustrated with the perceived lack of action and assertiveness from party leaders.

According to the report, many Democrat voters are urging elected officials to abandon traditional political decorum and instead embrace more theatrical and combative tactics, even if those actions draw controversy or legal risk.

One lawmaker told Axios that there is a “sense of fear and despair and anger” among voters, creating pressure to abandon conventional methods of opposition.

“We can’t keep following norms of decorum,” the lawmaker said.

Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL) told Axios, “We’ve got people who are desperately wanting us to do something … no matter what we say, they want [more].”

Some lawmakers cited the example of articles of impeachment filed against President Trump by members of the far-left faction within the Democratic Party as a reflection of the demands for more aggressive behavior.

Among the most high-profile incidents, Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) made headlines after he was tackled by security officers last month while attempting to confront Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Earlier this year, Rep. Al Green (D-TX) interrupted the President’s address before a joint session of Congress, shouting from the gallery before being removed.

In a separate incident in March, New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani was filmed shouting at Border Czar Tom Homan during an event.

The Axios report also included quotes from Democratic officials describing extreme feedback from some members of the base.

One Democratic official said, “What we really need to do is be willing to get shot” while protesting at immigration enforcement facilities.

Another official quoted a constituent who said, “What we’re doing is not good enough… there needs to be blood to grab the attention of the press and the public.”

One lawmaker told Axios that many constituents now believe “civility isn’t working,” and that more drastic action is required to push back against the Republican-controlled federal government.

Democrats currently do not hold a majority in either chamber of Congress.

Republicans control the House, Senate, the White House under President Trump, and a conservative majority remains on the Supreme Court.

According to multiple lawmakers, the imbalance of power has led to increasing pressure from liberal activists to rely on legal action, protests, and public disruptions as alternatives to legislation.

Still, some Democrat lawmakers warned that these tactics could backfire.

One elected official noted that many of those pushing for aggressive demonstrations come from affluent, progressive neighborhoods and may not face the same consequences as members of Congress, many of whom belong to minority communities.

“Not only would that be a gift to Donald Trump, not only would it make the job of Republicans in Congress easier if we were all mired in legal troubles … [we are] a group that is disproportionately people of color, women, LGBTQ people — people who do not fare very well in prison,” the lawmaker said.

Although not all Democrat lawmakers support adopting such tactics, nearly every lawmaker interviewed acknowledged receiving similar demands from voters in recent months.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, members of the party are grappling with how to satisfy a base that is growing increasingly restless without further weakening their own political standing.
