Democrats’ Top Ten Priorities – Self-Interest Number One, Everything Else Tied For Second

Just when you thought Chuck Schumer and Capitol Hill Democrats couldn’t screw the politics of the government shutdown up any worse than they already have thus far, along comes reporting from Axios that Democrats, desperately signaling they’re ready to end this nonsense, have actually made things worse.

On the eve of funding running out to support the 42 million Americans receiving aid from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, and the nearly seven million Americans on the Women, Infant and Children program, or WIC, John Thune once again brought up the clean continuing resolution up for a vote in the Senate. For the 14th time, all but three Democrats voted it down.

Yet that same day, Axios’ Hans Nichols, citing multiple sources inside the Senate Democratic Conference, indicated that the end of the shutdown was near, perhaps as soon as Wednesday.

NEWS — There’s a sense within the Senate Democratic caucus that next week will bring significant movement toward ending the government shutdown, multiple sources told Axios.

Did you get that? Enough Democrats to pass the C.R. have made the decision to cave. Now, it’s about the timing. Forget about the dire consequences of starving people. The real importance is how to save face easier for Democrats.

If Axios put out a story quoting anonymous sources in the Trump administration, I’d put about as much stock in that as I do an Ann Selzer poll out of Iowa the weekend before a presidential election. But Axios is joined at the hip with the Democratic Party, so if there’s any political group Axios would have some inside contacts with, it’s their homeys on the left side of the aisle.

It’s extraordinary how this is shaping up. To date, Democrats have sacrificed federal employees, the American Federal Government Employee Union, the entire rank and file of the United States Armed Forces, the poor, needy families, airline pilots associations, the Air Traffic Controllers Union, and the Teamsters. National Parks remain closed. People have been base jumping off El Capitan inside Yosemite, because there’s nobody there to tell them not to. Air travel inside the country has increasingly become a nightmare as staffing shortages are causing significant delays and/or cancellations, each one generating a ripple effect globally with connector flights.

Just to focus in on what military families on active duty are going through for the last month, bound to honor the contract they made when enlisting, even when it means not receiving any compensation for that service for the previous month, here’s what that looks like.

This Army solider isn’t getting paid because of the government shutdown.

He isn’t getting food stamps or SNAP.

He isn’t allowed to get another job.

Again, according to Axios, Democrats have decided to fold. They’re negotiating with Republicans on whether they can combine the C.R. with other appropriations bills that were already nearly finished in the Senate so they don’t have to cast a bunch of votes and be perceived by their base as caving repeatedly in rapid-fire succession. This gets them out of the trap of voting for another C.R. a week or so after caving on this one. That’s how little they think of their own political base. Senate Democrats believe their supporters are so utterly stupid and ignorant, they can survive them barking about them casting one vote, even if it’s one that’s an all-inclusive surrender. But if it’s a series of votes, accomplishing the exact same outcome, that’s untenable. Their base won’t tolerate that, and that terrifies them.

Here’s the other remarkable thing. There is absolutely no doubt now about how little Democrats care about those constituents for which they’ve been pretending to advocate in all their public preening for the last month-plus. Since they made the decision to cave on Friday morning, they could have just as easily voted to reopen the government so more federal employees don’t get pink slips in another round of Reduction In Force permanent cuts. They could have beat the SNAP and WIC funding deadline. They could have restored funding to the miltiary before the first of the month on Saturday, when a ton of them have rent and mortgage payments due. They could have backed up their words with deeds – voting for the clean C.R. so people in need wouldn’t be in a bind for another week. But that’s not the path they’ve chosen.

Instead, they voted to keep the shutdown going Friday, and are rumored to be stalling, voting to keep the government closed until at least after the New Jersey, New York, and Virginia elections Tuesday. Senate Democrats think so little of their own base’s intellect, they’re satisfied in keeping the misery going, because it’s the best chance they have at voter turnout in three state’s elections. It’s such a nakedly partisan way to end a nakedly partisan shutdown, editors would remove it from plot lines in thrillers because it’s such a cheesy premise.

And yet, this is exactly where we are. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas was on Fox News w/Maria Bartiromo to spell out how carefully politicized the coming Democratic capitulation is going to be.

🚨Ted Cruz thinks the Democrats are waiting to open the government until after the election on Tuesday:

“Wednesday or Thursday. The Democrats will wait until after the election day because they think a shutdown is good for energizing the crazies in their party.” pic.twitter.com/WJIvvNwTGN

Missouri’s Eric Schmitt was out for a walk and shared a video with his constituents about how reopening the government will go down.

If you are one of those Americans who will literally are struggling to find food now, and I’m sure there are a lot of Americans unfortunately in that position, I’m sorry you’re going through this challenge. I don’t think we are in a place where 42 million need food assistance, but there are some that do need the help. Democrats have just decided that you can jolly well starve for another week. Your hunger is just not their concern. Fooling their fever swamp base is the Senate Democratic Conference’s highest priority.

Chuck Schumer, the chief archtiect of this entire debacle, has been Tweeting a bunch as of late.

Trump is trying to withhold SNAP benefits from hungry families, children, seniors, and our vets.

He’s weaponizing hunger.

— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) November 1, 2025

This was posted a day after Axios broke the news that the Democrats were going to cave this week after the off-year elections. He knows they’re caving. He’s probably trying to manage the defections of his colleagues so that it doesn’t look to bad on his position of leadership. Again, that’s more important to Schumer than this false notion that he cares whether poor people eat or not, or if federal employees get paid.

If all the Republicans know they’re caving, and they do, then so does Schumer. Which means it’s not Trump and the Republicans weaponizing hunger, it’s Schumer and the Democrats. Why else would they not reopen last Friday when they had already reached that decision?

It’s over. The Democrats lost. There has not been one senior Democrat, yet, that has denied the Axios story. Yet you see this kind of foolishness from people like Chief Warren out of Massachusetts.

Good morning to everyone in Massachusetts who knows Senator Warren is the one really telling folks to “eat dirt” while SNAP benefits run dry.

Warren has voted “NO” 13 times to keep this government shutdown going, using it as leverage against Republican bills.

She knows exactly what the Republicans know. The Democrats have signaled to their Republican counterparts they have the white flag of surrender at the ready. It’s really down to the ‘when’, not ‘if’. In the meantime, she’s only acting as though A) she cares about the purported victims of the shutdown, and B) she’s right there in the fight with the fever swamp. She isn’t. If she actually were, she’d be telling them who the Democrats are that are about to cave.

The fun in all of this is that the odds are increasingly likely that it will not just be a handful of Democrats jumping ship on the shutdown and getting the C.R. to cloture. There’s safety in numbers, and when all is said and done, it’s going to be a lot harder for the fever swamp to primary all of the Senate Democrats then it will be to punish just a handful. When the capitulation happens, and it will after the elections Tuesday, all but the expected presidential hopefuls in 2028 will end up voting for it.

And speaking of voting for the package, here’s another delusional Democrat stuck out on the limb now that it’s being sawn off in real time, as everyone knew it eventually would.

Remember back when this shutdown got started, and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries vowed they would never give in?

BREAKING: Hakeem Jeffries just made it clear. Democrats will not fold. They are fighting for the American people’s right to affordable healthcare. We stand right by your side, Leader Jeffries. pic.twitter.com/8eO25GpKIU

— Democratic Wins Media (@DemocraticWins) September 29, 2025

Good times. News flash: They’re giving in.

Jeffries appeared on Jake Tapper’s Sunday show on CNN, and tried to keep up the lie that they’re in it for the long haul.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries won’t say whether the government will still be shut down for Thanksgiving:

TAPPER: Are Democrats prepared to keep the government closed through Thanksgiving if it comes to that?
JEFFRIES: The question is, why are Republicans continuing to… pic.twitter.com/2zbWTy73su

— State of the Union (@CNNSOTU) November 2, 2025

Now that the Teamsters and American Federation of Goverment Employees unions have threatened the Democratic Party implicitly if they do not end the shutdown now and pass the clean C.R., what do you want to bet that the House passes whatever package that comes out of the Senate relatively easily, with lots of Democratic support? There’s something about that sweet, sweet union campaign cash that can galvanize a Democrat’s viewpoint. I think the odds are safe enough that even Shohei Ohtani’s translator would be willing to entertain another wager.

The only true question now is whether the fever swamp, especially those voters living in the Commonwealth of Virginia, New Jersey, and New York live up to Senate Democrats’ low opinion of them. If Democratic voters swamp the polls on Election Day and win the two governor races and the mayoral contest in New York City, then I would have to conclude that the Democrats are indeed dialed in to the low IQ of their base.

But regardless, the Republicans, as if they needed another message to run on, now have one of the best opportunities handed to them on a silver platter imagineable.

Every ad, every media appearance, every tweet, and every floor speech by Republicans and GOP-friendly superPACs should remind those affected by the shutdown that even the Democrats know this shutdown is unsustainable, but yet they are still waiting until it’s more politically expedient for them to cave. They are specifically putting politics over everyone and everything involved.

It’s not getting better for them every day, even though Jeffries continued to make that argument with Tapper.

Hakeem Jeffries thinks the shutdown is good for the American people.

CNN: “Are you worried…that that pressure point will cause more Democrats to…vote for the government funding bill?”

JEFFRIES: “We’re continuing to make life better for the American people.” pic.twitter.com/gHvTatc4kT

— RNC Research (@RNCResearch) November 2, 2025

‘We’re making life better for you,’ says Hakeem Jeffries. He’s making life better for you by, *checks notes*, preventing you from getting paid if you’re in the military. He’s making life better for you by starving you if you’re on food assistance. He’s making life better for you by stranding you at the airport because air traffic control and other federal workers are becoming hard to come by when they don’t get paid for a month. And Democrats are so making your life better that they’re going to make you suffer for a another few days before we sound the retreat. To them, there’s winning in suffering, so long as it’s you doing the suffering.

Although three Democrats – John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, and Angus King of Maine (who is registered independent but conferences with the Democrats), have voted 14 times to reopen government, only Fetterman has been vocal about the absurdity behind his party’s political stunt. He continued that on CNN with Jake Tapper.

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman on who he blames for the shutdown:

FETTERMAN: “I feel like the Democrats really need to own the shutdown. I mean, we’re shutting it down.” pic.twitter.com/ywSPMlJVwL

— State of the Union (@CNNSOTU) November 2, 2025

To the dummies in the Democratic voting base who wake up Wednesday or Thursday morning outraged that Senate Democrats folded, don’t say you weren’t warned.

And it should serve as a lesson that the Democratic Party, and their allies in media, don’t tell you the truth, don’t respect you, don’t trust you, and have thrown you aside as they have with virtually all of their normal constituency groups that make up their coalition of voters. Why? Nothing is more important to today’s elected Democrats in Washington than their own self-preservation. Everything else, whether it’s people or issues, are a distant second.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is still here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
