Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials arrested Kilmar Abrego-Garcia on Monday morning at the agency’s field office in Baltimore, Maryland, according to confirmation from his attorney. The arrest came just days after his release from federal custody and amid plans to deport him to Uganda.

Abrego-Garcia has been at the center of a prolonged legal battle that has drawn national attention.

His case intensified after he was deported to El Salvador in violation of a 2019 court order, then later returned to the United States under direction from a federal judge and the Supreme Court.

On Friday, Abrego-Garcia was released from federal custody following months of detention.

He had been arrested after reentering the United States on human smuggling charges connected to a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee.

As part of the conditions for his release, a judge permitted him to live in Maryland under electronic monitoring and ICE supervision while awaiting trial.

ICE officials informed Abrego-Garcia’s lawyers shortly after his release that the agency intended to proceed with deportation to Uganda.

The notice, issued by ICE’s Office of the Principal Legal Adviser, stated: “This serves as notice that DHS may remove your client, Kilmar Armando Abrego-Garcia, to Uganda no earlier than 72 hours from now (absent weekends).”

On Monday, he reported to ICE’s Baltimore field office as required, where he was taken into custody.

Ahead of his arrival, immigration advocates, faith leaders, and community members gathered at sunrise outside the Baltimore office for a vigil.

The demonstration was organized by immigrant rights groups voicing opposition to his removal.

Uganda has recently entered into an agreement with the United States to accept deported migrants, including those targeted under the Trump administration’s enforcement measures.

Abrego-Garcia has been identified as a candidate for removal to the East African country.

Trump’s border czar Tom Homan confirmed the administration’s intent to move forward with deportation.

Speaking on Fox News’ The Big Weekend Show Sunday night, Homan said the plan to deport Abrego-Garcia was certain.

“He is absolutely going to be deported,” Homan said.

“We have an agreement with them. It’s on a table, absolutely.”

Homan added that Abrego-Garcia could spend limited time with his family before his removal, but stressed that deportation would proceed.

“He is absolutely going to be deported,” he repeated.

“For the person who says we’re not going to separate family, his family can go with him, because he’s leaving.”

Abrego-Garcia’s legal challenges began after his initial deportation to El Salvador earlier this year, which his attorneys argued violated a prior court order.

Following his return to the U.S., he faced new federal charges, prolonging his detention and sparking a series of court hearings.

With ICE now preparing to carry out removal to Uganda, the case has entered another phase of litigation, drawing continued national attention from immigration authorities, advocates, and political leaders.

The arrest in Baltimore underscores the administration’s commitment to advancing its deportation strategy and highlights the use of third-country agreements in the enforcement of immigration policy.
