Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats are making a last-minute effort to delay the confirmation of Kash Patel, President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Despite Patel enduring nearly six hours of questioning and submitting extensive documentation of his record, Democrats are demanding a second hearing to scrutinize his nomination further.
Democrats argue that Patel, a former intelligence and defense official, provided misleading testimony and must answer additional questions before his nomination proceeds.
Dennis Quaid’s #1 Warning for Americans
In a letter, committee Democrats wrote, “In order to discharge our constitutional duty, we must have a full and accurate understanding of Mr. Patel’s record. The Committee must fulfill its responsibility to the American people and the 38,000 employees of the FBI nationwide to ensure that a Director confirmed by the Senate possesses the requisite characteristics of truthfulness, trustworthiness, and regard for the protection of classified information befitting of the FBI.”
They further claimed that Patel was “wholly unwilling to answer questions posed by members of the Committee relating to his grand jury testimony and the circumstances that led him to assert his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.”
Additionally, the senators expressed their intent to question Patel about the dismissals of several FBI officials by acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, seeking to determine whether Patel had any involvement.
They also accused him of providing “apparent falsehoods” during his prior testimony.
Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) voiced his concerns on Wednesday, stating, “He [Patel] has an attitude, and to think this man will be in charge of 38,000 FBI agents and personnel, 400 field offices across the nation and around the world. It’s going to have the authority to investigate those who he chooses. It’s frightening. His message in politics is get even.”
On social media, Senate Judiciary Democrats posted, “Kash Patel’s nomination must be delayed until we can fully evaluate his misleading testimony.”

However, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) dismissed the request outright, calling it a political stunt meant to derail Trump’s law-and-order agenda.
In a letter to his Democratic colleagues, Grassley wrote, “Long before his hearing, Committee Democrats made clear that they stridently opposed Mr. Patel’s nomination.
The American people saw this unfounded opposition play out in his hearing, which devolved into unfair mischaracterizations of his record and attacks on his integrity.”
Grassley also pointed out that Patel is facing the same obstruction tactics that Trump’s other nominees, including Attorney General Pam Bondi, have encountered.
Meanwhile, he noted that Democrats have been silent on political bias within the FBI, including how Hillary Clinton and the Biden family were treated in past investigations.
Patel has been a vocal critic of the weaponization of federal agencies and has pledged to restore accountability in law enforcement.
Grassley defended Patel’s record and emphasized the need for consistency in the nomination process.
“There cannot be one set of rules for Republicans and another set of rules for Democrats,” Grassley said, reminding Democrats that when they held the majority, they denied Republican requests for additional hearings in 2022.
Despite Democratic opposition, Patel’s confirmation vote is still expected to move forward. The Judiciary Committee will determine the next steps as the battle over Patel’s nomination continues.
