Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany criticized Democrats’ claims that the U.S. is in a “constitutional crisis” under President Donald Trump, arguing that their rhetoric has not changed since the 2024 election.
Several Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns over Trump’s recent efforts to streamline the federal government, particularly the work of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in cutting wasteful spending. Critics claim these actions have put the country on the brink of a constitutional crisis.
McEnany, however, pointed out that these warnings mirror Democrats’ previous claims that Trump was a “threat to democracy” during the election—a message she believes failed to resonate with voters.
Dennis Quaid’s #1 Warning for Americans
“[Democratic New Jersey Sen.] Andy Kim, he went on to say, ‘we’re on the cusp of a constitutional crisis.’ That’s the new buzzword, because I heard [Democratic Connecticut Sen.] Chris Murphy say ‘it’s a constitutional crisis,’” McEnany said. “It’s as if they’ve not learned that the existential rhetoric did not work, the threat to democracy, not to mention we have sound we could pull up from any moment in December of [House Minority Leader] Hakeem Jeffries talking about government shutdowns hurting working people and those affected by hurricanes. What happened to that logic? It’s out the window 60 days later.”
The latest Democratic outcry comes after Trump and Musk dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) on February 3, citing wasteful spending on left-wing programs abroad.
The agency had come under scrutiny for spending billions of taxpayer dollars, including a $2 million grant for sex change operations in Guatemala and funding for over 65 million condoms to be distributed worldwide.
Following the decision to shut down USAID, Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as its acting director.
During an interview with ABC’s This Week on Sunday, Sen. Chris Murphy called the situation “the most serious constitutional crisis the country has ever faced.”
Similarly, Sen. Andy Kim warned on NBC’s Meet the Press that the U.S. is on the “cusp of a constitutional crisis” and suggested that Democrats may attempt to shut down the government in response to Trump’s actions.
Democratic lawmakers intensified their opposition to Trump’s reforms during a February 4 protest outside the Department of Treasury.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts took direct aim at Musk, calling him a “Nazi nutball baby” and a “godless, lawless billionaire.” She also vowed to “set fire” to the Republican Party.
Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota went even further, warning that people “can expect to see people get killed” in response to the dismantling of USAID.
Meanwhile, a group of congressional Democrats attempted to enter the Department of Education (ED) building on Friday in protest of Trump’s plan to shut down the agency.

The administration has pointed to the department’s failure to improve student proficiency despite massive federal spending.
Since COVID-19, the federal government has spent $190 billion on public education, yet student test scores in math, reading, and science have seen no measurable improvement.
With Trump and Musk continuing their push to restructure federal agencies and rein in government spending, the divide between the administration and its Democratic opponents is growing sharper.
As Democrats threaten further resistance to Trump’s agenda, the debate over the role of federal agencies and the extent of executive authority is expected to remain a focal point in the months ahead.
