After significant electoral setbacks and a declining approval rating among young male voters, the Democratic Party is seeking new ways to regain support from a key demographic it has increasingly lost over the past several years.

Polls show a growing gender divide in American politics, with young men trending more conservative while young women continue to back Democrats.

According to the latest Harvard Youth Poll, approval of Congressional Democrats among voters aged 18 to 29 has fallen sharply—from 42 percent in 2017 to just 23 percent in 2024.

In contrast, approval for Congressional Republicans among the same group rose slightly from 28 percent to 29 percent, marking the first time in years Republicans have overtaken Democrats in this age bracket.

In response to the shift, the Democratic Party has turned to left-wing activist and digital content creator Olivia Julianna as part of a broader strategy to reconnect with young men.

Julianna, who has a large online following, has appeared in recent interviews as a vocal advocate for progressive causes and outreach to college-aged men.

“I spend a lot of time on college campuses… I love young men. I love frat guys, and in that, I realize, even the ones who identify as conservative are almost always pro-choice. Almost always pro-gay marriage,” Julianna said during an interview with political commentator Micah Erfan.

“You’d be surprised at the number of them who supported Black Lives Matter. I feel like people kind of just lump them into this box when the truth is, again, a lot of them are with us on the issues. They’re just not part of our coalition because they feel like they’re not welcome.”

Despite her statements, recent polling data challenges several of her assertions.

A Gallup poll from earlier this year showed that only 49 percent of men nationwide identify as pro-choice, with support declining further among younger men.

Meanwhile, Pew Research data shows just 42 percent of white men support the Black Lives Matter movement, and opposition to BLM is overwhelming among Republicans and Republican-leaning voters, with 82 percent disapproving.

Critics of the Democrats’ strategy question whether Julianna is the right choice to lead outreach to young men, especially given the party’s previous efforts to use high-profile celebrities and entertainers to influence youth voters.

The Democrats’ struggle to appeal to young male voters comes after a 2024 election cycle marked by losses in key battleground states and declining enthusiasm among traditional Democratic coalitions.

Internal party discussions have pointed to messaging missteps, economic dissatisfaction, and perceived cultural disconnects as factors in the erosion of support.

The Republican Party has capitalized on the growing dissatisfaction, particularly among young men concerned about issues like free speech, economic opportunity, and gender-based policies in education and sports.

With the 2026 midterms approaching, Democratic strategists are now under pressure to refine their messaging and rebuild lost trust with young male voters.

Whether their current approach will gain traction remains to be seen.
