As California wildfires rage on, often thanks to years of mismanaged forests and environmental policies that prioritize bureaucracy over common sense, two brave Los Angeles County deputies cut through the chaos to rescue a centenarian trapped in a senior living home.

On January 8, as the Eaton Fire crept dangerously close to Altadena, Deputies Nicholas Martinez and Quinn Alkonis were searching a senior facility to ensure no one was left behind.

A house on top of a hill along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu was fully engulfed in flames from the Palisades Fire on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025. The fire erupted a day earlier amid fierce Santa Ana winds.

As reported by MSN, that’s when they encountered an elderly woman who had just returned from walking her dog—completely unaware of the mandatory evacuation order.

The woman, confused about whether others remained inside, sent the deputies on a mission that would lead them to a dramatic rescue.

Bodycam footage released by the sheriff’s department captured the tense moment when the officers heard a faint voice echoing through the hallways.

Following the sound, they found a 100-year-old woman struggling to find her way out. She told them she had missed the evacuation notice because her hearing aids were charging. In that moment, bureaucracy and policies didn’t matter—just two deputies determined to save a life.

“I’ve been trying to find a way out. Don’t lose me,” the elderly woman pleaded, as captured in the footage.

Without hesitation, Martinez and Alkonis swiftly guided her to safety, ensuring no other residents were left behind. Their immediate response and teamwork with other officers undoubtedly saved lives that day.

Reflecting on the experience, Alkonis humbly credited the quick reaction of his fellow deputies.

“The deputies’ courage and selflessness exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude.”

Sheriff Robert Luna commended their heroism, praising their quick thinking and courage, calling their actions a shining example of law enforcement at its best.

While California politicians love to demonize the police, stories like this prove that when crisis hits, it’s the men and women in uniform—not the out-of-touch elites in Sacramento—who step up to protect their communities.
