Kristen Bell, the voice behind Princess Anna in Disney’s blockbuster Frozen franchise, recently revealed an amusing story about how a not-so-subtle joke made its way into the 2013 animated film.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Bell shared the background on a particular line in the song “For the First Time in Forever” that might’ve flown under the radar for some, as reported by the New York Post.

In the song, Anna sings, “For years I’ve roamed these empty halls / Why have a ballroom with no balls?” While it’s an innocent lyric on the surface, it didn’t escape Bell’s notice that it carried a double meaning.

Reflecting on it, the 44-year-old actress said, “How did we get that joke in there?” before cheekily adding, “We slid it under the radar. It almost didn’t make it in, but we were like, ‘What are you talking about? That’s not what it means. Don’t be a perv.’”

Bell, known for her role in The Good Place and more recently Nobody Wants This, shared how much it meant to her to land a role in a Disney animated movie.

Growing up, she dreamed of being part of the Disney magic. “They’re so formidable in your life when you’re young, and I was obsessed with them,” Bell explained. She even recorded herself singing The Little Mermaid songs on her boombox as a kid, just in case Disney ever came knocking. Little did she know, that dream would come true.

Once cast as Princess Anna, Bell initially thought she’d do whatever Disney asked of her. However, Bell quickly realized she had the opportunity to shape her character into something more relatable for young girls.

“What I should be valiantly striving for is to create a character that I really needed to see when I was 11 years old, which was someone like this character,” she said. Bell’s vision for Anna was clear: a princess who wasn’t picture-perfect. “I want her to wake up with drool in her mouth. I want her to snore. I want her to talk too much and too fast and wear her heart on her sleeve and trip over things. The real quirk for a girl who is lovable but not as put together, and thankfully this whole experience was really collaborative. Some of those things they wrote in, and others they didn’t and they let me kind of take the reigns.”

The collaboration with Disney allowed Bell to bring these ideas to life. Frozen went on to become a massive hit, raking in over a billion dollars worldwide.

Its sequel, released in 2019, enjoyed similar success. As for Frozen 3, Bell hinted at its inevitability, joking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, “If we’re all in, what are we waiting for?”
