Scott Adams, the creator of the long-running comic strip Dilbert, announced on Monday that he has been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer, the same type of cancer recently disclosed by Joe Biden’s office.

Adams shared the news on his podcast, Real Coffee with Scott Adams, where he revealed that the cancer has spread to his bones and that his doctors have given him only a few months to live.

“Today, I am going to take the opportunity… to make an announcement of my own,” Adams told listeners. “Some of you have already guessed, so this won’t surprise you at all. I have the same cancer that Joe Biden has, so I also have prostate cancer that has also spread to my bones. But I’ve had longer than he’s had it—well, longer than he’s admitted having it.”

Adams, 66, said he expects to pass away sometime this summer. “So my life expectancy is, maybe, this summer,” he said.

“I expect to be checking out from this domain, sometime this summer.”

He described the physical toll the disease has taken, including constant pain and the daily use of a walker.

“Every day is a nightmare, and evening is even worse,” Adams said during the podcast.

The Dilbert comic strip, which launched in 1989 and became widely syndicated, gained popularity for its satirical take on the corporate world through the lens of the title character, an office engineer.

It was pulled from hundreds of newspapers in 2023 after Adams made comments about race during another podcast appearance that drew widespread backlash. Following the controversy, Dilbert was relaunched as a webcomic.

While Adams was best known for his comic strip, he was also an early political commentator.

He gained broader political attention during the 2016 presidential election when he predicted Donald Trump’s victory, citing Trump’s communication and persuasion skills.

Adams continued to offer political analysis and commentary on his podcast, often hosting guests from across the political spectrum.

In a 2018 interview with the Washington Examiner, Adams praised Trump’s first year in office.

“I think history might judge this one of the most successful first years of any presidency,” Adams said at the time.

“From a Republican point of view, the number of things that he got done that were important to them is really impressive.”

Adams pointed to ISIS being “beaten down,” declining illegal immigration, North Korea showing signs of flexibility, and a strong U.S. economy.

He also noted historically low levels of Black unemployment and rising small business confidence as indicators of a successful administration.

Despite the end of Dilbert’s newspaper syndication, Adams continued to publish his comic independently and regularly discussed current events on his podcast.

He remained active in political discourse even after facing criticism over his past remarks.

Now facing a terminal illness, Adams said he finds some solace in knowing roughly how much time he has left.

“I have to say everybody has to die, as far as I know,” Adams said.

“And it’s kind of civilized that you know about how long you have so you can put your affairs together and make sure you’ve said your goodbyes and done all the things you need to do.”

“So, if you had to pick a way to die, this one is really painful—like really, really painful,” he added.

“But it’s also kind of good that it gives you enough time while your brain is still working to wrap things up.”

Scott Adams gives solid words of wisdom after revealing his cancer diagnosis.

“I realize that for some of you, this is hitting you hard because you’re hearing it for the first time.”
