Disney has recently faced backlash over its decision to remove a transgender storyline from the upcoming Pixar animated series Win or Lose.

The series, set to debut on Disney+ in February, has become the center of controversy, with former employees expressing dismay over the company’s decision.

The storyline, which reportedly focused on the experiences of a transgender character, was cut after the episode had already been completed.

A Disney spokesperson addressed the move, saying, “When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline.”

The decision to remove the storyline has sparked criticism within the company.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, several former Pixar employees voiced frustration over what they see as a prioritization of profits over meaningful storytelling.

Sarah Ligatich, a former Pixar assistant editor who consulted on the episode, shared her disappointment: “It hardly surprised me, but it devastated me. For a long time, Disney has not been in the business of making great content. They have been in the business of making great profits. Even as far back as two years ago when I was at Pixar, we had a meeting with [then-CEO] Bob Chapek, and they were clear with us that they see animation as a conservative medium.”

Some employees suggested that the decision could have broader implications, claiming that removing the storyline could negatively impact transgender individuals by eliminating representation that might save lives.

The Win or Lose episode featuring the transgender storyline was reportedly complete, making its removal costly and disruptive.

Former employees indicated that the changes require additional work to prepare the series for its February release.

One former Pixar staffer, who spoke anonymously, described the episode as “beautiful” and said it had the potential to make a significant difference for viewers. “It was literally going to save lives by showing those who feel alone and unloved that there are people out there who understand,” they said.

The insider added that the episode had evolved significantly from earlier iterations, which included scenes of the character deliberating over which bathroom to use.

They expressed frustration that Disney chose to spend money on removing a storyline rather than investing in representation.

The eight-episode animated series Win or Lose follows the off-the-field lives of characters involved with the Pickles, a co-ed middle school softball team, as they prepare for their championship game over the course of a week.

Each episode highlights the perspective of different characters, including players, parents, coaches, and umpires.

The series is set to premiere on Disney+, a streaming platform that has faced challenges in maintaining subscriber growth and profitability in recent months.

The controversy surrounding Win or Lose comes as Disney navigates other challenges, including a $15 million defamation settlement with Donald Trump and internal dissatisfaction following his election victory.

While Disney’s decision to cut the storyline was framed as a response to parental concerns, it has reignited debates over the company’s approach to representation and its ability to balance creative storytelling with corporate priorities.

The release of Win or Lose on Disney+ in February will likely continue to attract scrutiny as the series becomes a focal point in ongoing cultural and corporate discussions.
