The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has formally launched an initiative it is calling the “People’s Cabinet,” a group of Democratic-aligned figures who will act as a self-declared alternative to President Donald Trump’s administration.
The announcement was made this week by DNC Chair Ken Martin, who framed the effort as a response to what he described as “unimpeded lies” and a “reckless agenda” from the current administration.
The move comes shortly after Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called for the creation of a “shadow government” during a town hall event in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Walz encouraged Democrats to hold “alternate press conferences” and provide their own version of events to the public.

Martin’s People’s Cabinet will reportedly feature former public officials, policy advocates, and activists. It is designed to function as a parallel communication outlet that aims to challenge and counter the Trump administration’s messaging on a range of national issues. The DNC says the Cabinet will serve as a “rapid response” network to release statements, attend events, and promote policy alternatives.
“Trump has stacked his Cabinet with out-of-touch billionaires who are causing chaos and hurting working people. That is why we are launching the People’s Cabinet. It will be made up of experts, leaders, and everyday Americans who will share reliable and accurate information that you can use to fight back.”

Among those named in the People’s Cabinet are:
Robert Reich, former Labor Secretary and progressive economic commentator.
Mandela Barnes, former lieutenant governor of Wisconsin who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate.
Heidi Heitkamp, former U.S. Senator from North Dakota.
Martin O’Malley, former Maryland governor and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate.
“I’ve been traveling across the country nonstop since I started this job, and what I hear over and over is this: Americans want us to fight back against Trump’s lies and offer a better alternative,” Martin said.
According to DNC materials, the People’s Cabinet will focus on healthcare, economic policy, labor issues, and so-called “disinformation.” It plans to coordinate national messaging, media appearances, and digital engagement in what party officials call an attempt to “provide accurate information.”
The initiative arrives at a time when the Trump administration is moving ahead with its second-term agenda, which includes major policy pushes on trade, immigration, national security, and energy independence.
In April, Trump’s White House also pushed forward with new executive orders affecting federal agencies and streamlining regulatory processes. Administration officials have dismissed criticism of the current Cabinet, stating that the team was selected based on performance and loyalty to the administration’s America First principles.

The People’s Cabinet has already received criticism from political observers who see the project as a partisan counter-government, operating without official accountability or constitutional authority. Critics have also noted that the individuals leading the initiative include former politicians and activists who have previously lost elections or held appointed roles without voter mandates.
Despite these concerns, the DNC appears committed to expanding the effort ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, with plans for ongoing public events and national outreach campaigns aimed at undermining the Trump administration’s agenda.
The White House has not issued a response to the launch of the People’s Cabinet.
