Elon Musk informed Tesla shareholders on Tuesday that he plans to significantly reduce his involvement in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) starting next month.
Speaking during Tesla’s quarterly earnings call, Musk said he will be shifting his time back toward the electric vehicle company as his work for the federal initiative nears completion, as reported by The New York Post.
“Starting next month, I will be allocating far more of my time to Tesla,” Musk said, according to Business Insider.

He explained that “the major work of establishing” DOGE has been accomplished, and that his “time allocation” to President Donald Trump’s cost-cutting project “will drop significantly” beginning in May.
Musk has served as the de facto leader of DOGE since earlier this year under the special government employee (SGE) designation. Federal rules limit SGEs to 130 consecutive days of service, placing May 30 as the final day of Musk’s current eligibility.
The 53-year-old billionaire said he is open to continuing a limited role, spending a day or two a week on government matters, “as long as it is useful” and Trump supports the arrangement.
President Trump has praised Musk’s contributions to the administration and expressed a desire to keep him onboard for as long as possible.

Speaking to reporters on April 3, Trump said, “We’re in no rush, but there will be a point in time in which Elon’s going to have to leave,” acknowledging Musk’s obligations to Tesla, SpaceX, and Starlink.
“He’s got a number of companies to run,” Trump added, while emphasizing Musk is welcome to remain “as long as he likes.”
Musk’s announcement came as Tesla reported a 71% decline in net income for the quarter, citing multiple external challenges.
In recent months, Tesla has also been targeted by arsonists and vandals, incidents Musk has linked to his role in the Trump administration.
“I think a great wrong is being done to the people of Tesla and to our customers, ” Musk told Fox News’ Bret Baier during a “Special Report” interview last month.
“I mean, Tesla’s a peaceful company that has made great cars, great products — that’s all it’s done. It hasn’t harmed anyone, and yet, people are committing violence.”
Musk did not provide further details on his post-DOGE plans but indicated that his primary focus will return to Tesla’s operations and innovation efforts.
